PM Modi’s Massive Roadshow in Puducherry: BJP Gears Up for April 9 Assembly Elections With Red Zone Security

Published on

Puducherry / Chennai, April 3, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Puducherry on Friday, April 3, to a massive and rousing public welcome, leading a high-energy roadshow through the streets of the Union Territory just six days before the crucial Assembly election scheduled for April 9. The roadshow, which began at the Ajanta Signal point and extended toward the Raja Theatre signal, drew tens of thousands of cheering supporters and was accompanied by vibrant cultural performances and traditional dances showcasing the rich heritage of Puducherry. The PM was flanked throughout by Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who heads the AINRC-led National Democratic Alliance government in the territory.

Modi’s visit to Puducherry and Chennai marks a significant escalation in the BJP-led NDA’s campaign push for the April 9 polls, which are set to be closely contested between the ruling NDA coalition and the opposition INDIA bloc led by the Congress and DMK. The roadshow is part of a broader campaign blitz by the Prime Minister, who has been criss-crossing southern India in recent days to energise the BJP’s base and rally support behind the NDA’s candidate list ahead of elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The Roadshow: A Sea of Supporters

The 1.7-km roadshow route through Puducherry saw unprecedented crowd turnout, with supporters lining both sides of the street and waving flags, garlands, and banners. The Prime Minister acknowledged the crowd with waves and namaskars from his vehicle, interacting warmly with supporters along the route. Cultural troupes performed classical Bharatanatyam, folk dances, and traditional Pondicherry music, reflecting the territory’s unique blend of Tamil and French cultural influences.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who has been leading the NDA government in Puducherry since the 2021 elections, accompanied Modi throughout the roadshow, underscoring the alliance’s unity going into the polls. The BJP has released its candidate list for the Puducherry Assembly seats, with the party contesting in close partnership with the AINRC, PMK, and other NDA allies in the territory.

Red Zone: Security Lockdown Across Puducherry

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, several areas along his route and in his vicinity were declared “Red Zones” by security agencies, with extensive deployment of central and state police forces, NSG personnel, and paramilitary units. Traffic was diverted across large sections of Puducherry, and businesses along the route were asked to shut their shutters ahead of the roadshow for security reasons. Drone surveillance was deployed over the entire route, and multiple layers of security cordons were established around the PM’s convoy.

The security arrangements reflected both the high political importance of the visit and the elevated threat environment linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has raised the security alert level for VIP movements across India. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s office has been coordinating with state governments to ensure enhanced security protocols for all such high-profile visits during the current period of global uncertainty.

Chennai Visit: Modi Addresses Tamil Nadu Rallies

Before the Puducherry roadshow, PM Modi also visited Chennai where he attended campaign events in support of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu assembly election push. Tamil Nadu, which holds its elections alongside Puducherry on April 9, is a state where the BJP has historically struggled to make an impact but has been working hard to expand its footprint through its alliance with the AIADMK under Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

In his addresses in Chennai, Modi spoke about the central government’s development initiatives in Tamil Nadu, including infrastructure projects, welfare schemes, and the digital India mission. He also criticised the incumbent DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, accusing it of focusing on “family politics” and “political appeasement” rather than genuine development. The BJP released its full candidate list for Tamil Nadu seats on April 3, ahead of the filing deadline.

Puducherry Elections: What Is at Stake?

The Puducherry Assembly election is being held for the 30-member legislature of this small but strategically significant Union Territory on the southeastern coast of India. The territory has historically been a battleground between the Congress-DMK alliance and the NDA, with power changing hands multiple times. In 2021, the AINRC-BJP led NDA won the election and formed the government under Chief Minister Rangasamy, defeating the Congress-DMK combine that had ruled under V. Narayanasamy.

Going into the April 9 polls, the NDA is seeking a second consecutive term and is banking on the Central government’s development work and the PM’s personal popularity to swing votes. The opposition INDIA bloc, led by Congress and DMK, is fielding a strong candidate list and is hoping to make gains on the back of local anti-incumbency sentiments and issues like rising prices, LPG price hikes, and the economic impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict on fuel and commodity prices.

Political Significance: BJP’s Push in South India

PM Modi’s intensive personal involvement in the Puducherry and Tamil Nadu campaigns underscores the BJP’s determination to strengthen its presence in South India, which has largely eluded the party despite its dominant position nationally. A strong NDA showing in the April 9 elections would be seen as a significant political achievement for the BJP and would bolster the party’s claim to be a truly national force capable of winning in all regions of the country.

Political analysts note that the timing of Modi’s visit — amid the dramatic global developments around the US-Iran war, the NATO coalition on the Strait of Hormuz, and the shooting down of a US fighter jet — is significant. The PM’s decision to personally campaign despite the global crisis demonstrates his confidence in India’s stability and signals to voters that the BJP government is firmly in control of both the domestic and international situation. The results of the April 9 elections will be watched closely as an indicator of the BJP’s momentum heading into the remainder of 2026.

Modi’s Development Agenda for Puducherry

During his campaign visit, PM Modi highlighted several key Central government schemes that have benefited Puducherry, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for affordable housing, the Jal Jeevan Mission for clean drinking water, and schemes for the modernisation of the territory’s French-heritage infrastructure and tourism sector. He noted that Puducherry, with its unique status as a Union Territory directly administered by the Centre, has been a priority for the BJP government’s urban and coastal development programmes. Modi also highlighted the expansion of Puducherry Airport’s infrastructure and the development of tourism facilities along the territory’s picturesque coastline as evidence of the Central government’s commitment to the region’s prosperity.
