Adani Ports Weighs Bid for UK’s Associated British Ports in Deal Valued Over £10 Billion

Published on

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) is reportedly evaluating a bid to acquire a controlling stake in Associated British Ports (ABP), the United Kingdom’s largest port operator, in a deal that could value the company at more than £10 billion. The move would mark a significant expansion of Gautam Adani’s global port network into Western Europe, adding to the conglomerate’s existing portfolio of ports across India, Israel, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Australia.

ABP, which operates 21 ports across England, Scotland, and Wales, is currently owned by a consortium of Canadian pension funds, including the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) and Borealis Infrastructure, an arm of Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS). Reports indicate the owners are seeking a valuation north of £10 billion for the business, which handles roughly a quarter of the UK’s seaborne trade.

Strategic Push Into Western Europe

If completed, the acquisition would represent Adani Ports’ first major foothold in the United Kingdom and Western Europe, regions where the company has previously had limited direct exposure. APSEZ has been aggressively pursuing international expansion in recent years as part of Chairman Gautam Adani’s strategy to build one of the world’s largest integrated ports-to-logistics platforms, alongside operations in Haifa, Israel, and Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Industry analysts note that acquiring ABP would give Adani Ports access to critical UK trade infrastructure, including major container, bulk, and energy handling terminals, at a time when global supply chains are being reconfigured amid geopolitical tensions and shifting trade routes.

Deal Still in Early Stages

People familiar with the matter caution that discussions remain preliminary, and there is no certainty that Adani Ports will proceed with a formal offer or that a transaction will be finalized. The Canadian pension funds are said to be exploring options for their stake, and multiple potential bidders could emerge as the sale process develops.

Neither Adani Ports nor representatives for ABP’s current owners have issued an official confirmation of the reported talks.

Context: Adani Group’s Global Expansion

The potential ABP deal comes as the Adani Group continues to expand across multiple sectors, including energy, airports, and infrastructure, both in India and internationally. The conglomerate has also been working to move past the fallout from a 2023 short-seller report and a subsequent US indictment, with Gautam Adani recently filing a sworn affidavit in a US court denying any deal was linked to the Department of Justice’s move to dismiss criminal charges against him.

Why It Matters

A successful acquisition of ABP would significantly strengthen Adani Ports’ global standing, positioning the company among the top port operators worldwide and giving it strategic access to one of Europe’s busiest maritime trade hubs. For India, continued overseas expansion by Adani Group underscores the growing international ambitions of the country’s private infrastructure conglomerates.
