NEW DELHI, October 15: The Cabinet has approved continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme for 2026–27 through 2030–31 with an outlay of ₹53,428 crore. The October 14 decision also approves new names for the programme and its components, alongside changes to disability pension eligibility.
What changes for disability assistance?
The approved benchmark-disability threshold falls from 80% to 40%, and the minimum-age criterion is extended to birth. The announced assistance is ₹375 for ages 0–79 and ₹625 for people aged 80 and above. Detailed implementation guidelines are to be issued and implemented within three months, the government says.
Which benefits stay in their existing form?
The old-age pension, widow pension and family-benefit schemes continue in their existing form. The Cabinet announcement therefore should not be described as an across-the-board increase for every pensioner.
What are the new names?
NSAP becomes Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana. Its old-age, widow, disability and family-benefit components are renamed Pradhan Mantri Vridhavastha Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Vidhawa Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Divyangjan Pension Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Parivar Labh Yojana.
What beneficiaries should check next
An approved policy and an operational benefit are not the same thing. The next useful document is the implementation guidance: it should clarify how the revised criteria are applied and how the responsible authorities handle applications and existing records.
Families should not treat a headline about eligibility as confirmation that a particular application has been accepted. They should ask the relevant local welfare office about the applicable process and wait for official instructions before paying an intermediary or submitting personal documents to an unfamiliar website.
The central assistance figure also should not be confused with the final total a beneficiary may receive under any separate state arrangement. This announcement does not establish an identical combined payment in every state.
Why the details matter
The lower disability threshold and removal of the minimum-age barrier concern who may be considered, while the assistance rates concern the benefit itself. Keeping those questions separate makes the change easier to understand and prevents a broader claim than the Cabinet actually approved.
