India Signs ₹4,106 Crore Deals for GSAT-7C Satellite and Varunastra Torpedoes

India has signed two defence contracts worth approximately ₹4,106 crore, covering a dedicated communications capability for the Indian Air Force and indigenous anti-submarine torpedoes for the Navy, the Ministry of Defence announced on October 15.

The larger agreement is for GSAT-7C, a communication satellite valued at ₹2,563 crore. It was signed with Bengaluru-based New Space India Limited. The second, worth ₹1,543 crore, is with Bharat Dynamics Limited in Hyderabad for Varunastra Heavy Weight Torpedoes.

How the ₹4,106 crore is divided

AcquisitionContract valueSupplierService
GSAT-7C₹2,563 croreNew Space India LimitedIndian Air Force
Varunastra torpedoes₹1,543 croreBharat Dynamics LimitedIndian Navy

What GSAT-7C is intended to do

The ministry describes the satellite as an indigenously designed, developed and manufactured system intended to improve secure and resilient communications between Air Force assets. The operational purpose is connectivity: helping those assets communicate reliably rather than adding a combat aircraft or weapon to the fleet.

A signed contract should not be confused with a completed launch or operational deployment. The announcement does not give a launch date, an in-service deadline or a detailed public breakdown of the satellite’s coverage and capacity.

What Varunastra adds

Varunastra is a ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory. According to the ministry, its manoeuvring capability and ability to engage submarines at long ranges are intended to strengthen the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability.

The release identifies the procurement value and supplier but does not disclose the number of torpedoes ordered. It also does not publish a delivery schedule or the ships on which this batch will be deployed. Those gaps matter when assessing how quickly the contract translates into additional capability at sea.

Why the contracts matter

The two purchases address different operational needs—communications in the air and undersea threats to surface ships—while placing orders with domestic suppliers. The agreements were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) A. Anbarasu.

The immediate development is the award of contracts. Performance claims, production milestones and deployment dates will need to be assessed against subsequent official disclosures, rather than inferred from the size of the order alone.
