Carlos Alcaraz Returns After 139 Days With Straight-Sets US Open Win

Published on

The Carlos Alcaraz US Open comeback began with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Roman Safiullin after 139 days away from competitive tennis. The defending champion reported no pain in his wrist after a two-hour, 22-minute match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

NEW YORK | 1 September 2026

The straight-sets score looked routine, but the circumstances made it one of the most closely watched opening matches of the tournament. Alcaraz had not played a professional singles match since suffering a wrist injury near the start of the clay-court season. His performance offered the first competitive evidence that the seven-time Grand Slam champion can resume a title defence without immediate physical restriction.

Alcaraz vs Safiullin: match result

  • Winner: Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed and defending champion.
  • Score: 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
  • Duration: two hours and 22 minutes.
  • Next opponent: Portugal’s Jaime Faria.
  • Physical update: Alcaraz said his arm and wrist felt pain-free.

World No. 99 Safiullin created opportunities and tested the Spaniard’s timing, but Alcaraz played the important points more effectively. He produced familiar forehand winners and drop shots while accepting some rust in the form of 27 unforced errors and five double faults.

What the numbers say about the comeback

The official US Open report put Alcaraz’s average first-serve speed at about 112 mph, below his usual peak range. Even so, he won 66% of points behind the first serve. That balance matters after a wrist injury: the serve may take time to regain full speed, but placement, variation and the ability to win the next shot can protect a player while confidence returns.

Alcaraz broke in each set and avoided the extended physical struggle that a five-set match could have produced. A straight-sets win does not prove that the wrist will remain comfortable deep into a two-week tournament, but it reduced the immediate workload and gave the defending champion a controlled first test.

Why 139 days away changes the challenge

Match fitness is different from training fitness. Players can reproduce strokes and movement in practice, but they cannot fully recreate scoreboard pressure, unpredictable rallies, crowd energy and the need to recover between tournament matches. Alcaraz acknowledged that he felt unusually nervous and had forgotten parts of his match-day routine during the long absence.

Those comments give context to the errors without turning them into an injury alarm. Alcaraz said he was able to play his normal style and felt pain-free. The next test is recovery: how the wrist responds overnight, whether serve speed rises naturally and whether he can maintain intensity through longer rallies.

The history Alcaraz is chasing

Alcaraz entered New York trying to become the first man since Roger Federer to defend the US Open title. Federer won five consecutive championships from 2004 through 2008. The modern men’s draw has repeatedly shown how difficult it is to sustain a title run through hard-court conditions, late-night sessions and seven best-of-five-set matches.

The Spaniard’s status as the defending champion adds pressure, but the injury break also changes expectations. His opening priority is to build competitive rhythm without overloading the wrist. A player can look sharp in one match and still need several rounds to recover timing on return, especially against opponents who redirect pace or extend rallies.

What Safiullin tested

Safiullin did not simply provide a ceremonial return. He forced Alcaraz to defend his serve and made him work through physical exchanges. The Russian had chances to move ahead, but the No. 2 seed’s variety repeatedly changed the pattern of rallies. Drop shots brought Safiullin forward, while heavy forehands opened space across the baseline.

Alcaraz’s willingness to use those options was as significant as the final score. Players returning from wrist problems can sometimes protect the joint by reducing acceleration or avoiding particular angles. The match report and Alcaraz’s own assessment did not indicate that kind of visible limitation, though only repeated competition can establish durability.

What comes next against Jaime Faria

Faria presents another opportunity for Alcaraz to add match minutes without immediately facing a top seed. The defending champion will likely focus on improving his first-serve percentage, reducing double faults and finding a cleaner balance between aggressive shot-making and error control.

For tournament followers, the more useful indicators will be movement after wide balls, backhand stability under pressure and how quickly Alcaraz recovers between rounds. A single pain-free match is encouraging; a sequence of pain-free matches would be stronger evidence that the wrist can withstand a Grand Slam campaign.

Early verdict

Alcaraz’s comeback delivered the result he needed: three sets, no reported pain and a place in the second round. The lower serve speed and error count show that improvement is available, while his control of decisive points suggests competitive instincts returned quickly.

The victory makes him a leading contender again, but the responsible conclusion after one match is narrower. His wrist passed the first test. New York will now measure whether it can pass six more.
