China and Philippines Trade Blame After Coast Guard Collision Near Palawan

Published on

MANILA: The Philippines and China have given sharply different accounts of a collision involving a Philippine fisheries vessel and a China Coast Guard ship in the South China Sea, adding fresh tension to a long-running maritime dispute.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said the incident involved the BRP Datu Magat Salamat during a humanitarian-support activity roughly 54 nautical miles from Palawan. The department said the vessel sustained damage after action by the China Coast Guard, and described the waters as being within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

Beijing gives a different account

China’s Foreign Ministry gave a conflicting version, saying a Philippine official vessel carried out provocations and deliberately rammed a China Coast Guard ship near Xianbin Jiao. That is Beijing’s account of the event; Manila disputes it.

Both governments therefore acknowledge that an incident occurred, but disagree over how it began and who was responsible. The competing statements are central to the diplomatic dispute and should not be treated as an independently settled account of the collision.

Why the incident matters

Encounters between Chinese and Philippine vessels have become a regular source of friction in the South China Sea. Manila says it is acting inside areas covered by its exclusive economic zone, while Beijing asserts wider maritime claims. Each new collision or close encounter raises the risk that a maritime confrontation could deepen into a broader political crisis.

The immediate questions are whether either side will release additional evidence, including video or navigational data, and whether the incident affects future Philippine resupply or fisheries missions. Public statements from both capitals will remain important because the available accounts differ substantially.
