Eid al-Fitr 2026: India Celebrates Eid Mubarak on March 21 — Prayers, Festivities and the Joy of Ramadan’s End

Published on

India woke up this morning on Saturday, March 21, 2026, to the joyful sounds of “Eid Mubarak” greetings echoing from mosques to markets, from Delhi’s Jama Masjid to Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid and Mumbai’s Minara Masjid. Eid al-Fitr 2026 is being celebrated across most parts of India today, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan after 30 days of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The Shawwal crescent moon was not sighted on March 19, confirming that Ramadan would complete its full 30 days, with Eid falling on March 21.

Why is Eid on March 21 in India?

The final date for Eid al-Fitr in India depends on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon, which marks the beginning of the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. On the evening of March 19, religious authorities including the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee and representatives of Delhi’s Jama Masjid confirmed that the crescent moon was not visible. As a result, Ramadan was extended to a full 30 days, and Eid was declared for Saturday, March 21, 2026.

An exception was made in Kerala, where local committees confirmed moon sighting on March 19, leading the state to celebrate Eid a day earlier on March 20. This is a common occurrence in India, where regional moon sighting authorities can declare Eid on different days based on local observations.

Celebrations Across India

Delhi: Thousands of Muslims gathered at Jama Masjid for the special Eid namaz (prayer) this morning. The area around Chandni Chowk was decked with lights and street food vendors. Traffic diversions were put in place around the mosque area from early morning.

Mumbai: At the Minara Masjid in Pydhonie, one of Mumbai’s most famous mosques, thousands gathered for the special Eid prayers. The mood was festive, with families dressed in new clothes and children eagerly collecting Eidi (gifts of money) from elders. Mumbai’s Mohammed Ali Road, famous for its Ramadan food culture, was buzzing with special Eid sweets including sheer khurma and seviyan.

Hyderabad: The historic Mecca Masjid and Charminar area saw massive crowds for Eid prayers. Hyderabad’s famous Laad Bazaar and surrounding streets were adorned with decorations. The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, home to a large Muslim population, came alive with the spirit of Eid.

Lucknow: UP’s cultural capital observed Eid with prayers at the iconic Asafi Mosque in Bara Imambara and at Eidgah. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended Eid greetings to the people of Uttar Pradesh. Security arrangements were beefed up across sensitive areas of the state.

The Significance of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, which literally means ‘Festival of Breaking the Fast,’ is one of the most important celebrations in Islam. It marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, during which Muslims around the world abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, engaging in prayers, charity, and self-reflection. The day begins with a special prayer called Salat al-Eid, performed in congregation at mosques and open grounds.

Central to Eid celebrations is Zakat al-Fitr — a mandatory act of charity that must be paid before the Eid prayer, ensuring that even the poor can participate in the celebrations. Muslims who can afford to do so give food or its monetary equivalent to those in need, strengthening community bonds and promoting social equality.

Eid Traditions in India

In India, Eid is marked by distinct cultural traditions that vary by region. Here are some of the most cherished customs:

  • Eid Namaz: The day begins with the special Eid prayer at dawn, followed by a sermon
  • New clothes: Wearing new clothes (Eid ka joda) is a beloved tradition, especially for children
  • Sheer Khurma and Seviyan: Homes are filled with the aroma of these traditional sweet dishes made with vermicelli, milk, dates and dry fruits
  • Eidi: Elders give gifts of money to children and younger family members
  • Chand Raat (Night of the Moon): The eve of Eid is celebrated with shopping, henna application, and festive activities
  • Community gatherings: Visits to relatives and neighbors are a must, with the greeting ‘Eid Mubarak’ shared by all

Eid 2026 and the Iran War: A Bittersweet Celebration

This year’s Eid comes against the backdrop of the ongoing Iran-US-Israel war, which has entered its 21st day on March 21, 2026. The war has had a particular emotional impact on India’s Muslim community, as many have family connections in the Gulf region and are deeply concerned about the fate of the holy sites in the Middle East. Indian Muslims have been holding special prayers for peace in the region during the last ten days of Ramadan.

Despite the global turmoil, Eid celebrations in India have been conducted with full spirit, with community leaders emphasizing the festival’s message of peace, brotherhood, and hope. Several mosques organized special prayers for peace in the Middle East at the end of the Eid namaz.

Political Greetings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to the nation on Eid al-Fitr 2026. ‘Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating this joyous occasion. May this festival of togetherness and compassion bring happiness and prosperity to all,’ PM Modi wrote on social media. Several state Chief Ministers also extended their greetings, with leaders from across the political spectrum coming together in the spirit of Eid.

Security Arrangements

Extensive security arrangements were made across major Indian cities for Eid celebrations. In Delhi, over 5,000 police personnel were deployed around Jama Masjid and other mosques. CCTV surveillance was intensified in sensitive areas. Similar security measures were in place in Lucknow, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and other cities with large Muslim populations. Authorities have appealed for peaceful celebrations while maintaining a high level of preparedness.

Eid al-Fitr 2026 Around the World

While India celebrates on March 21, other countries have observed Eid on different days. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and most Gulf countries celebrated Eid on March 20, 2026, following moon sighting reports in those regions. Pakistan also celebrated Eid on March 20. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh celebrated along with India on March 21. Muslims in Europe and North America observed Eid on March 21 in most regions.

This year’s global Eid celebrations are particularly poignant as Muslims in Iran are celebrating Nowruz (Persian New Year) on the same day while also living through a devastating war. The coincidence of Eid and Nowruz on March 21 has drawn global attention, with world leaders expressing hope for peace in the region.

Press of Asia wishes all readers a very Happy Eid al-Fitr 2026. Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating. May this festival bring peace, joy, and prosperity to all.
