IDBI Bank Sale: Cabinet Approves Fairfax Entity’s ₹52,878 Crore Bid for 60.72% Stake

NEW DELHI, October 15: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved 10955230 Canada Inc., whose parent is Fairfax Financial Holdings, as the strategic buyer for a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank. The government’s October 14 release puts the purchase consideration at approximately ₹52,878.08 crore.

What is being sold?

The transaction comprises 30.48% held by the Government of India and 30.24% held by Life Insurance Corporation. Their residual holdings would be 15% and 19%, respectively. The approved winning offer is ₹81 a share, compared with an independent valuation benchmark of ₹75.99.

Approval is not completion

The official announcement says the buyer must present its credentials to the Reserve Bank of India in line with the earlier fit-and-proper assessment and submit a roadmap for regulatory compliance. The report therefore should not be read as confirmation that ownership transfer has already closed.

This distinction matters for customers and investors alike. A selected bidder, a regulatory-compliance process and a completed transaction are separate milestones. The next material update will be evidence that the conditions have been met and the transfer has taken place.

What the bid price does—and does not—tell investors

The transaction price is the accepted offer for a controlling stake in this specific process. It is not a guaranteed future exchange price for every investor. A quoted market price and a strategic-sale valuation answer different questions and can move differently.

The government describes a two-stage competitive process that began with an expression of interest in October 2022. Four parties qualified initially and two ultimately submitted techno-financial bids, the release says.

What customers should watch

The announcement does not set out new terms for individual savings accounts, loans or deposits. Customers should look for direct official communication from the bank concerning any change affecting their own products, rather than infer such a change from the ownership headline alone.

This is a report on the approved transaction and its outstanding steps. It is not a recommendation to buy or sell IDBI Bank shares.
