NEW DELHI, October 18, 2026: India’s National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority has announced a 30% trade-margin cap for 137 identified non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines, with revised prices taking effect on November 9.

Key highlights

  • The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority has capped trade margins at 30% for 137 non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines.
  • Revised prices take effect on November 9; retailers and hospitals must display them from that date.
  • The Department of Pharmaceuticals says price cuts could reach 70% depending on existing price structures; that is a maximum, not a uniform discount.
  • Patients can check prices on NPPA’s website and the Pharma Sahi Daam app.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals’ October 17 statement says reductions could reach 70%, depending on existing price structures. That is a potential maximum, not a uniform discount on every product or a reduction in the entire cost of cancer treatment.

What the decision changes

The intervention targets margins in distribution and retail. Manufacturers must communicate revised prices to the regulator within seven days of the Gazette notification. Retailers and hospitals must implement and display the revised prices from November 9.

The government says patients can check prices using NPPA’s website and the Pharma Sahi Daam application. Hospitals receiving direct supplies are also responsible for applying the revised rates. Manufacturers are required to maintain supply.

Our calculation: a medicine whose retail price includes a trade margin far above 30% will see the biggest cut; at the maximum quoted reduction of 70%, a strip priced at ₹10,000 would fall to ₹3,000. Most products will fall by less.

What patients should check

The relevant comparison is the exact medicine, strength, formulation and pack size on the new price list. A claim that every cancer prescription is immediately 70% cheaper would go beyond the announcement.

Families seeking an estimate can ask the treating hospital’s pharmacy for an itemised quotation and the applicable notified price. Drug charges should be considered separately from consultations, tests, procedures and admission charges.

This is a pricing-policy report, not medical advice. Patients should not stop or substitute prescribed treatment because of a pricing headline. Any treatment decision belongs with the qualified clinical team.

When the change applies

As of publication, the revised-price start date remains November 9, 2026. The announcement does not say that every bill issued before that date must already reflect the new rates.
