QNu Labs Gets ₹150 Crore RDI Support for India’s Quantum-Secure Technology Project

QNu Labs has signed an agreement with the Technology Development Board for ₹150 crore of support towards a ₹300 crore quantum-security and sensing project. The announcement is a development commitment, not evidence that the planned network is already operational.

What the agreement covers

The Department of Science and Technology announced the agreement on October 16, 2026. Support under the Research Development and Innovation Fund will take the form of optionally convertible debt.

The Bengaluru company’s programme aims to develop an indigenous technology stack for India’s Quantum Secure and Sensing Networks. It targets progression from Technology Readiness Levels 4–5 towards TRL-9, spanning development, integration and validation.

The programme covers four areas: device identity, location integrity, network security and time integrity. Those objectives relate to authenticating equipment, protecting communications and making navigation and timing systems more dependable, according to the ministry.

Quantum security is not one single technology

NIST distinguishes post-quantum cryptography from quantum cryptography. Post-quantum methods use mathematical algorithms designed to resist attacks by future quantum computers and can run on conventional computing systems. Quantum cryptography instead uses quantum physical processes and specialised devices.

Quantum key distribution is one example of the latter approach. It distributes encryption keys using quantum particles. It should not be treated as another name for all post-quantum encryption, nor as a guarantee that an entire computer system is immune from compromise.

What would demonstrate progress?

The useful milestones now are independently documented testing, integration with real systems and evidence that the technology meets its stated performance requirements. A funding agreement and a technology-readiness target are starting points for assessing delivery, not substitutes for that evidence.

The ₹150 crore support figure should also be kept separate from the ₹300 crore total project cost. Reporting them as two new grants, or describing the full project cost as government funding, would misstate the announcement.
