Sabarmati–Katra Direct Rail Link Starts: Train Numbers, Return Date and Travel Checks

NEW DELHI, October 19, 2026: Passengers travelling from Gujarat towards Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra have a new direct option through the extension of the existing Sabarmati–Jammu Tawi Express. The outward extension was announced for journeys beginning October 18, while the extended return service has a different effective date.

This is an extension of an existing service, not the creation of a completely separate train. For travellers, the practical change is that the same service can continue beyond Jammu Tawi to Katra on the applicable dates, reducing the need to arrange a separate connection for that part of the journey.

Train numbers and reported timetable

Financial Express reported Western Railway’s announcement that Train 19223 would leave Sabarmati at 10:25 am daily and reach Katra at 6:55 pm the following day. The extension applies to journeys starting October 18, 2026.

For the return journey, Train 19224 was announced to depart Katra at 4:50 am daily and reach Sabarmati at 2:05 pm the next day, with the extension effective for departures beginning October 20.

The two effective dates should not be treated as interchangeable. An outward journey starting on one date does not establish that an extended return service is available from Katra on that same date.

Which additional stops were announced?

The announcement described additional halts at Samba and Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station, with Train 19223 also stopping at Bari Brahman. Passengers should still verify the station-by-station timetable for their own train number and travel date.

Jansatta’s October 18 report also described the direct Sabarmati–Katra connection and its significance for pilgrims who would otherwise need to change transport at Jammu. The extension announcement itself was reported earlier; October is the implementation window, not the date on which the plan was first made public.

Before booking: three separate checks

First, identify the correct train number. A destination such as Katra can be served by more than one train, and a timetable for another service is not evidence about 19223 or 19224.

Second, check availability for the complete intended journey. A route extension does not guarantee that a berth is available, that the desired class is attached on every date or that an existing ticket automatically includes an additional segment.

Third, check the current running information before departure. The dates and times above reproduce the published announcement, not a live operational feed. Engineering work, service changes and other operational notices can affect a particular trip.

Plan for the arrival time, not just the departure

The announced journey arrives on the following calendar day. Travellers arranging accommodation, local transport or onward plans should use the arrival date shown in the reservation rather than assuming a same-day journey.

The return departure is early in the morning. Passengers should plan how to reach the station in time, particularly when travelling with children, older relatives or anyone needing assistance. A direct train removes one possible interchange but does not remove the need to plan the rest of the trip.

What this report does not establish

No fare, confirmed berth availability or day-specific punctuality is promised here. These depend on the booking and operating information for the individual journey. The extension also should not be confused with the separate arrangements governing a visit to the shrine.

The useful development is a clearer through-rail option from Sabarmati to Katra. Its value for an individual traveller will depend on the available class, total journey time and suitability of the departure and arrival hours. Verify those details before committing to non-refundable onward arrangements.
