Samsung Electronics Q3 Profit Hits ₩107.4 Trillion as Chips Drive Record Results

October 29: Samsung Electronics reported third-quarter revenue of ₩195.3 trillion and operating profit of ₩107.4 trillion on October 29. Its semiconductor division powered the results, while the consumer-device business showed that the gains were uneven across the group.

Key highlights

  • Revenue rose 14% from the preceding quarter.
  • The chip division reported ₩106.5 trillion in operating profit.
  • The Device eXperience division recorded a ₩0.8 trillion operating loss.
  • Quarterly capital expenditure reached ₩29 trillion.

Where the earnings came from

In its earnings presentation, Samsung attributed the memory business’s performance to expanding HBM4 sales and demand for server solid-state drives. It also reported improved foundry utilisation and demand for advanced manufacturing nodes. The company’s news release said the quarter ended on September 30.

The contrast with Device eXperience, which covers phones, televisions and home appliances, is important. Sales growth in finished devices does not necessarily translate into higher profit when costs, product mix and competitive conditions move at the same time.

Group revenue195.3
Group operating profit107.4
Semiconductor revenue147.1
Semiconductor operating profit106.5
Device eXperience operating result−0.8
Capital expenditure29.0

The presentation notes that business-unit sales include intersegment transactions. Adding every division’s revenue together therefore does not reproduce consolidated group revenue.

Reading the margin and the spending

Our calculation: ₩107.4 trillion divided by ₩195.3 trillion gives an operating margin of approximately 55.0%, using the company’s rounded figures. Semiconductor operating profit was equivalent to about 99.2% of the group total. The latter is a comparison of two reported figures, not an allocation of every consolidated adjustment.

The concentration makes the durability of memory earnings a central question for subsequent quarters. Buyers’ capacity plans, product qualifications and pricing can matter as much as the volume of chips shipped. Strong current results should be separated from assumptions about how long those conditions will last.

Capital expenditure is also distinct from operating expense. It helps build or upgrade productive assets, while the accounting cost of those assets is recognised over time. Comparing one quarter’s investment directly with one quarter’s profit can obscure that timing difference.

What to watch

Samsung’s news release put its full-year capital-expenditure expectation at ₩84.4 trillion. That is management’s outlook, subject to execution and market conditions. Investors and suppliers will be watching whether semiconductor momentum is sustained and whether the consumer-device division returns to profitability.

This report concerns Samsung Electronics. Samsung C&T, whose separate results we covered earlier, is a different listed company; the two sets of sales and profit figures should not be combined.
