Trump Says Iran War Could Extend Beyond 5 Weeks: ‘The Big Strike is Coming’

Published on

US President Donald Trump has signaled that the American and Israeli military campaign against Iran could extend well beyond his initial estimate of four to five weeks, raising fears of a prolonged conflict in the Middle East with far-reaching global consequences.

In his first live address since the US-Israel strikes began on February 28, 2026, Trump told CNN’s Jake Tapper: “We haven’t even begun to hit them hard; the major wave hasn’t yet occurred. The big one is on its way.” He also stated that the US and Israel were “substantially ahead of time projections” in terms of military objectives.

Trump Outlines War Goals:
Trump stated three clear objectives for the campaign:

  1. Dismantling Iran’s missile capabilities
  2. Destroying Iran’s naval forces
  3. Ensuring Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon and cannot fund militant groups

He claimed: “Everyone is supporting us, they just lack the courage to express it.”

Ground Troops Possible:
The Pentagon announced additional US military deployments to the Middle East. Trump also did not rule out sending ground troops into Iran, a move that would represent a massive escalation and could trigger responses from Russia and China, which have expressed concern about the conflict.

International Reaction:
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged Iran to seek a “diplomatic solution,” while European leaders called for restraint. Russia called the strikes “illegal and destabilizing.” China called for an immediate end to hostilities.

The UN Secretary-General made an urgent appeal for a ceasefire, warning that the conflict threatens regional stability and global energy security.

Criticism at Home:
Inside the United States, critics are questioning the lack of a clear exit strategy. Members of Congress from both parties have demanded that Trump explain the objectives, timeline, and expected costs of the war. Some are calling for a Congressional vote authorizing the use of force.

Democrats have accused Trump of acting unilaterally without proper authorization, while some Republicans have expressed concerns about the potential for mission creep and the lack of a clear endgame.
