India’s Forex Reserves Hit Record $729.33 Billion: What Drove the Surge

Published on

India’s foreign-exchange reserves rose by $12.422 billion to an all-time high of $729.328 billion in the week ended August 21, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s latest data. The increase was driven by foreign-currency assets, gold holdings and fresh FCNR(B) deposits linked to a special swap window.

India has entered a new reserve milestone after its foreign-exchange stockpile climbed above $729 billion. The weekly gain was unusually large: the total increased from the previous week by $12.422 billion, surpassing the earlier record of about $728.49 billion reported for the week ended February 27.

The figures strengthen India’s external buffer at a time when global interest-rate expectations, energy prices and capital flows remain volatile. They do not guarantee a stable rupee or insulate the economy from every external shock, but they give the RBI more room to manage periods of disorderly currency-market pressure and meet the country’s external payment needs.

Key numbers from the latest RBI data

  • Total foreign-exchange reserves: $729.328 billion.
  • Weekly increase: $12.422 billion.
  • Foreign-currency assets: up $9.482 billion to $591.333 billion.
  • Gold reserves: up $2.801 billion to $114.218 billion.
  • Special Drawing Rights: up $112 million to $18.852 billion.
  • Reserve position with the IMF: up $26 million to $4.925 billion.

Foreign-currency assets are the largest component of the reserves. The RBI reports them in US dollars, but the figure also reflects movements in other currencies held in the portfolio, including the euro, yen and pound. Changes can therefore come from actual inflows and outflows as well as valuation effects when exchange rates move.

What drove the $12.42 billion jump?

The biggest contribution came from foreign-currency assets, which increased by $9.482 billion in one week. A key factor was the RBI’s special dollar-rupee swap window for Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank), or FCNR(B), deposits. Under such an arrangement, banks can bring in foreign-currency deposits and swap the funds with the central bank, reducing part of their exchange-rate risk and encouraging dollar inflows.

The facility has been operational since June 8 and is scheduled to close on August 31. Reporting based on the latest banking data put FCNR(B) deposits at about $65.4 billion as of August 21. The timing suggests the final weeks of the window contributed to the sharp reserve build-up, although the published reserve total is the combined result of several flows and valuation changes.

Gold provided the second-largest boost. The value of the RBI’s gold holdings rose by $2.801 billion to $114.218 billion. That increase can reflect both changes in the quantity held and movements in international gold prices. Gold now forms a more visible part of central-bank reserve portfolios worldwide as policymakers diversify assets, though dollar-denominated securities remain the main component of India’s reserves.

Why record reserves matter

Foreign-exchange reserves act as a financial safety buffer. They support confidence that a country can pay for imports and service external obligations even if market access becomes more expensive. The RBI can also sell dollars during periods of excessive rupee volatility, while buying dollars when inflows are strong. Its stated approach is generally to curb disorderly movement rather than defend one fixed exchange rate.

A larger reserve stock can improve market confidence, but the headline total should not be read in isolation. Analysts also watch import cover, short-term external debt, the cost of carrying reserves and the source of new inflows. Deposits attracted through a temporary swap window, for example, have different characteristics from long-term foreign direct investment. They strengthen near-term liquidity, but they also create future repayment or rollover considerations.

The latest increase follows a period in which domestic banking liquidity has also been unusually high. For a related monetary-policy view, read The Press of Asia’s report on how the RBI’s liquidity drain is shaping bond-market expectations.

What it means for the rupee

A record reserve position gives the RBI greater capacity to smooth sharp currency moves, especially when foreign investors withdraw funds or importers raise dollar demand. It does not mean the rupee must appreciate. The exchange rate still responds to inflation differences, interest rates, trade flows, oil prices, global risk appetite and the strength of the US dollar.

If the central bank buys dollars to prevent excessive appreciation, reserves can rise while rupee liquidity enters the banking system. The RBI may then use separate tools to absorb that liquidity. Conversely, when it sells dollars to calm a rapid depreciation, reserves may fall. This two-way movement is normal and means a lower weekly reserve number is not automatically a sign of economic weakness.

Is this the same as the July reserve update?

No. The Press of Asia previously reported the RBI reserve position for the week ended July 17, when the stockpile was above $676 billion. The latest release covers the week ended August 21 and records a new all-time high after a much larger weekly increase. It is a separate data event with a new milestone and a different driver.

What happens after the swap window closes?

Attention will turn to whether reserves remain near the record after the FCNR(B) window closes on August 31. Weekly totals can fluctuate as currencies and gold are revalued, debt payments fall due, capital flows change and the RBI intervenes. A small decline after a sharp rise would therefore not, by itself, reverse the broader improvement.

Markets will also track the rupee, global bond yields, crude-oil prices and the RBI’s liquidity operations. India’s growth outlook remains another part of that assessment; readers can see The Press of Asia’s broader explainer on the India GDP growth outlook for 2026–27.
