IMF Raises India Growth Forecast to 7% for FY27 and FY28

The International Monetary Fund has raised its India growth forecast to 7% for both 2026–27 and 2027–28, giving the country a stronger outlook even as the global expansion remains uneven.

The October update lifts the FY27 projection from 6.4% in July and the FY28 estimate from 6.7%, according to Moneycontrol’s report. Akashvani also reported the 7% forecasts, highlighting resilient domestic demand and services activity.

What changed in the India forecast?

Financial yearJuly forecastOctober forecast
FY27: 2026–276.4%7.0%
FY28: 2027–286.7%7.0%

The first upgrade is 0.6 percentage points; the second is 0.3 percentage points. These are changes in the projected growth rate, not additions to the size of the economy measured in rupees.

India’s fiscal year is not the global calendar year

India’s FY27 runs from April 2026 to March 2027. Readers comparing this number with another country’s forecast should check the time period first. A calendar-year figure and an Indian financial-year figure cover different months.

The wider outlook remains more restrained. ANI’s report in The Tribune puts projected global growth at 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, while describing continuing risks to the recovery.

What the upgrade does—and does not—tell us

A stronger forecast signals improved expectations. It is not a final GDP result, a promise about household incomes or a prediction that every industry will expand at 7%. Future official output figures will show whether the anticipated momentum materialises.

For India, the useful questions are whether demand remains broad, whether services growth feeds employment and whether energy and shipping costs disrupt business. The upgrade should therefore be read alongside later GDP, inflation and employment releases, rather than as a stand-alone verdict on economic wellbeing.
