NEW DELHI, October 15: The Union Cabinet has approved a productivity-linked bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages for 11,40,770 railway employees. Announced on October 14, the decision carries a total cost of ₹2,009.61 crore, with a maximum payment of ₹17,951 for each eligible employee.
Who is covered?
The official release identifies eligible non-gazetted railway employees. It lists track maintainers, loco pilots, train managers or guards, station masters, supervisors, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen, ministerial staff and other Group C staff.
The announcement says the annual payment is made before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. It does not provide an individual employee’s bank-credit date.
78 days does not mean 78 days of take-home pay
The two numbers should be read together: a bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages and the stated ₹17,951 maximum. Readers should not multiply their personal daily take-home salary by 78 and assume that result is their entitlement. The release’s ceiling is the relevant upper limit for the announced payment.
What employees should check
- Whether their category and service record meet the applicable eligibility conditions.
- The separate bonus entry on the payroll statement, rather than assuming it is part of a salary revision.
- The payment position with their railway’s payroll or establishment office if the amount has not appeared.
These checks help distinguish an approval from an individual payment. The government announcement is not a payslip, and it cannot confirm whether a particular employee has received the money.
Why the decision was taken
The Cabinet linked the bonus to railway performance in 2025–26, citing cargo loading of 1,670 million tonnes and nearly 7.41 billion passengers. Those system-wide figures provide the government’s explanation for the award; they do not change the individual ceiling.
For household budgeting, the practical point is that this is a productivity-linked payment for the eligible workforce, not a newly announced permanent increase in monthly wages. Employees should rely on official payroll communication for their own payment calculation.
