COLOMBO, November 3: Sri Lanka’s inflation edged up to 8.3% in October from 8.0% in September, as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) released on October 30, and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) expects it to stay in the high single digits until the first quarter of 2027 before easing towards its 5% target.
Key highlights
- Headline CCPI inflation rose to 8.3% year on year in October, from 8.0% in September.
- Food inflation was 8.8% (8.7% in September) and non-food inflation 8.0% (7.7%).
- Core inflation, which strips out volatile items, rose to 5.6% from 5.4%.
- Prices rose 0.35% in the month; non-food items, mainly restaurants and hotels, contributed 0.33 percentage points of that.
- The CBSL says inflation should move back towards the 5% target after the first quarter of 2027, assuming the effects of the Middle East tensions fade.
October’s numbers
| Measure (year on year) | October 2026 | September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Headline CCPI inflation | 8.3% | 8.0% |
| Food inflation | 8.8% | 8.7% |
| Non-food inflation | 8.0% | 7.7% |
| Core inflation | 5.6% | 5.4% |
Our calculation
- Distance from target: headline inflation is 3.3 percentage points above the CBSL’s 5% target.
- What drove the month: non-food items accounted for 0.33 of the 0.35-point monthly rise, or about 94%, with food adding only 0.02 points.
- Underlying pressure: core inflation, at 5.6%, is already above the target too, so the rise is not only about food or fuel.
What it means
After a long spell of very low inflation and even falling prices in 2024–25, prices in Sri Lanka are rising faster again, with services such as restaurants and hotels now leading. For households the change is gradual, but it narrows the room for interest-rate cuts. The central bank’s outlook depends on Middle East-related pressures easing; if energy and shipping costs stay high, the return to 5% could take longer. For India, one of Sri Lanka’s biggest sources of tourists and a major trading partner, steadier Sri Lankan prices matter for travel costs and trade.
What to watch
- The CBSL’s next monetary policy review and any change in its inflation projections.
- November’s CCPI figures, due at the end of the month.
- The national NCPI inflation figure, which covers the whole country rather than Colombo.
