Gandhinagar Slab Collapse: All 15 Workers Rescued, 12 Hospitalised

GANDHINAGAR, September 10, 2026: All 15 workers caught in a Gandhinagar slab collapse were rescued after an iron slab gave way at an under-construction commercial site in Kudasan on Wednesday night, according to reports citing local officials. Twelve workers were taken to hospital, while three were discharged after they were found to have no major injuries.

The incident triggered a large emergency response involving fire and rescue personnel, police, medical teams and heavy equipment. Officials focused first on locating workers and stabilising the damaged structure so rescuers could enter without causing a second collapse. Senior state and municipal officials also reached the site while the operation continued.

What happened at the Kudasan site

Initial accounts said workers were engaged at the project when a portion of the structure failed late in the evening. Early reports referred to an iron or concrete slab and scaffolding around the casting area. Because those descriptions were issued during an active rescue, the precise sequence remains subject to a technical investigation.

One preliminary account suggested that equipment may have struck part of the structure, while another described a failure during slab casting. Neither possibility should be treated as a confirmed cause until engineers and safety authorities examine the design, temporary supports, construction method, materials and machinery records.

Rescue completed, investigation now critical

The successful rescue is the immediate relief in a potentially deadly incident. The next responsibility is to determine why the structure failed and whether the site complied with approved plans and worker-safety requirements. Investigators are expected to inspect the remaining building, assess whether adjoining sections are stable and preserve evidence before reconstruction begins.

A complete inquiry should examine several points:

  • The design and placement of temporary supports and scaffolding.
  • The timing and sequence of the slab-casting operation.
  • The load carried by the affected section at the time of failure.
  • Maintenance and movement records for cranes or other heavy equipment.
  • Worker training, protective equipment and emergency procedures.
  • Municipal approvals and the frequency of site inspections.

Why construction safety cannot end with the rescue

Temporary works are often the least visible part of a project, yet they carry enormous risk. Formwork, props and scaffolding must support wet concrete and construction loads before the permanent structure gains its designed strength. A small error in bracing, sequencing or load distribution can spread rapidly across a floor.

Night work can add further challenges, including limited visibility, fatigue and coordination between machinery operators and workers on the structure. These factors do not establish the cause in Kudasan, but they are standard issues a credible safety review should consider.

Authorities should also make the inquiry’s findings public once verified. Transparent reporting helps prevent rumours, gives injured workers and their families a clear account, and allows builders across Gujarat to learn from any identified failure. If violations are found, accountability should follow the evidence rather than speculation issued in the first hours after the accident.

Condition of the workers

Reports available Thursday morning said 12 workers remained under medical care and three had been discharged. Hospitals and authorities had not yet released a detailed public injury bulletin. Names and medical details should be handled with care until families are informed and official information is available.

The Press of Asia will update this article if authorities issue a final casualty report, identify the cause or announce regulatory action. Readers should rely on official emergency information and avoid sharing unverified videos or claims about the site.

Construction firms working on similar projects should review temporary supports, machinery-clearance rules and night-shift supervision now, without waiting for the final inquiry.
