Several people were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital after a crowd surge at the north Kolkata pandal on October 17. Early reports differ on the number of casualties.
KOLKATA, October 17, 2026: A crowd surge at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata has left several people injured, with news reports stating that 17 people have died. Visitors were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital as emergency personnel responded to the incident on Saturday evening.
The casualty figures remain provisional. NDTV’s live report, updated at 10.11 pm IST, reported 17 deaths. However, the available reports do not provide a consistent, final accounting of those killed, injured or admitted to hospital.
Latest update: Chief minister reports 17 deaths
Updated October 18, 2026, 12:08 am IST. The New Indian Express, with PTI inputs, now attributes 17 deaths and 25 injured to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. It reports that 17 people were brought dead to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. This advances the earlier position in which deaths were reported without an attributed official confirmation.
In a report updated at 11.15 pm IST on October 17, The Times of India also attributes 17 deaths to the chief minister, but gives 15 injured. The injury totals therefore remain inconsistent across reports. The Press of Asia has not obtained a consolidated hospital bulletin and is not treating either injury figure as a final total.
Both outlets report that the Prime Minister announced PMNRF assistance of ₹2 lakh for each bereaved family and ₹50,000 for injured people. The New Indian Express also reports that Amit Shah postponed his Sunday programmes in West Bengal and planned to visit the injured. The following account retains the chronology of the initial reports; earlier figures below are not the latest casualty update.
What happened at Chorbagan?
The incident occurred during the evening rush at the Durga Puja venue, when rainfall coincided with heavy crowds.
According to a police update reproduced by The Times of India, the incident took place at approximately 7.40 pm at the exit gate of Sarada Park, also identified as Chor Bagan, under Girish Park police station.
The report said people waiting outside moved forward as rain began, with some falling amid the crowd movement. Police subsequently closed the pandal to visitors. Disaster-management personnel were deployed, and injured visitors were taken to hospital. These accounts provide an initial sequence of events. They do not establish the complete cause of the tragedy or determine responsibility.
How the initial casualty reports differed
Indian Express Bangla, in a report updated at 10.21 pm IST, reported 17 deaths and said hospital sources indicated that 40 to 50 injured people had been brought in.
The Times of India separately reproduced a police update stating that approximately 35 people had been shifted to the hospital. The number transported to a hospital should not automatically be treated as the final number of injured survivors.
At an earlier stage, The New Indian Express reported 17 people feared dead while explicitly noting that Kolkata Police had not confirmed the casualty figures at that point.
The distinction matters: a reported death toll, a hospital-arrival count and a final official casualty bulletin are different measures. This report therefore does not present “17 dead and 35 injured” as a settled official total.
Emergency response and hospital treatment
The injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, also referred to as Kolkata Medical College in some reports.
NDTV’s earlier account reported that West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal reached the hospital to assess the situation.
The New Indian Express reported that some people brought to hospital were showing signs of breathing distress. A detailed medical bulletin would be necessary to establish the number admitted, the condition of individual patients and the confirmed causes of death. No victim identities are being included in this report without reliable confirmation.
What caused the crowd surge?
Rain and heavy crowd movement feature in the police account carried by The Times of India. Other early reports contain claims about a structural collapse, narrow passageways or inadequate arrangements.
Those claims should not be merged into a single established explanation. It remains necessary to determine whether any structure failed, where people first fell and how movement through the entry and exit routes was being managed.
Responsibility for the incident cannot be assigned solely from short videos, witness allegations or the scale of the casualties.
Questions that require investigation
A detailed examination should establish the crowd conditions immediately before the incident, the route visitors were following and whether entry was restricted as congestion increased.
Other relevant questions include whether emergency exits were accessible, how the response was coordinated and whether ambulances and rescue personnel could reach those needing assistance.
These are questions for investigators, not findings of negligence. Any response from the organisers, police or other responsible authorities should be assessed alongside documentary evidence and the reconstructed sequence of events.
What readers should watch for next
The most important next update is a consolidated casualty bulletin from the police, health authorities or hospital administration. It should distinguish deaths, injured people admitted, patients discharged and those requiring further treatment.
Further clarification is also needed on the pandal’s closure, any restrictions in the surrounding area and the scope of an official investigation.
Until those details are available, readers should avoid circulating unidentified casualty lists, graphic images or unverified claims about responsibility.
Developing story: This account was updated on October 18, 2026, at 12:08 am IST, with the later attributed official statements summarized above. The death toll, injury figures and explanation of the incident remain subject to further official clarification. The Press of Asia has not independently obtained a final police or hospital casualty bulletin.
