Sankoo will be the headquarters of the new district. The official notification identifies four tehsils and changes Kargil’s jurisdiction.
The Ladakh administration has formally notified the creation of Sankoo district, a new administrative unit carved out of Kargil. Its October 16 announcement identifies Sankoo as the district headquarters.
Which areas are included?
The Revenue Department’s Notification S.O. 284 names four tehsils: Sankoo, GM Pore, TSG and Taisuru, together with the revenue villages specified in the notification. Areas transferred to the new district are excluded from Kargil’s jurisdiction.
The administration says the notification takes effect from its publication in the Official Gazette. The Ladakh e-Gazette lists S.O. 284 for the new district and a separate S.O. 285 concerning LAHDC Sankoo.
Why is it being called the eighth district?
Moneycontrol reported that five districts had been notified earlier this year in addition to Leh and Kargil. Sankoo takes that total to eight.
What should residents check?
District status and the opening of every local office are not the same event. Residents seeking revenue records, certificates or a change in the office handling an application should look for the administration’s service-specific instructions rather than assume all procedures have changed immediately.
Useful details to watch include the publication of office addresses, designated officials, contact numbers and arrangements for pending files. This report does not announce new fees, recruitment or automatic changes to personal records.
What the decision means
The official aim is to bring governance and public services closer to residents. That is an intended benefit, not a measured outcome yet. The practical test will be how the new administration handles access to offices and continuity of services.
