US Fighter Jet Shot Down Over Iran: One Crew Member Rescued in Daring Search-and-Rescue Operation as War Escalates

Published on

Tehran / Washington, April 3, 2026: In one of the most dramatic and consequential developments of the ongoing US-Iran war, an American fighter jet was shot down over central Iran on Friday, April 3, 2026, making it the first confirmed instance of a US combat aircraft being downed by Iranian forces in hostile territory during this conflict. A daring search-and-rescue operation was swiftly launched by US forces, and one of the two crew members aboard the aircraft has been successfully rescued and is receiving medical treatment, two sources confirmed to international news agencies. The fate of the second crew member remains unknown as of Friday evening.

The incident marks a dramatic escalation in the air war between the United States and Iran, which began approximately five weeks ago with coordinated US-Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian missile sites, nuclear-related infrastructure, and military installations. The loss of a manned combat aircraft over Iranian territory raises the stakes of the conflict enormously and has drawn fresh calls for a diplomatic resolution from capitals across the world, including from India which has significant strategic and energy interests in the region.

What Happened: The Shootdown Over Central Iran

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for shooting down the US aircraft, identifying it in separate statements as both an F-35 stealth fighter and an F-15E Strike Eagle. US Central Command did not immediately confirm or deny either Iranian claim. However, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to Axios that a shootdown had occurred and that a search-and-rescue mission was underway over central Iran to locate and retrieve the two-member crew.

According to reports and social media footage circulated by Iranian state media, at least one US C-130 transport aircraft and an Apache attack helicopter were spotted flying at low altitude over central and southwestern Iran, widely interpreted as part of the rescue effort. CNN later reported, citing two sources, that one crew member was alive and had been rescued by American forces and was receiving medical treatment. The second crew member’s status remained unclear as of the time of this report.

Iran’s Claim: A New Air Defence System

The IRGC’s Aerospace Force said in an official statement that the US aircraft was “struck and downed over central Iran” by what it described as a “new air defense system.” Iranian state media celebrated the incident as a major military achievement, with official channels broadcasting footage they claimed showed wreckage of the aircraft. The IRGC also said in its statement that “due to the severe explosion of the aircraft upon impact and crash, it is unlikely that the pilot ejected safely” — a claim that appeared to be contradicted by the US rescue operation which confirmed at least one crew member survived.

This was the second time within 48 hours that Iran had claimed to shoot down a US F-35 fighter jet. On Thursday, April 2, the IRGC made a similar claim, which was flatly denied by US Central Command. “All US fighter aircraft are accounted for,” CENTCOM said in a statement on Thursday. The Friday incident, however, appears to be different from Thursday’s disputed claim, with multiple independent sources confirming that an aircraft was indeed lost.

Prior Aircraft Losses: Context and Background

The US has previously lost military aircraft during this conflict, but not to direct enemy fire over Iranian territory. At least 16 MQ-9 Reaper drones have been shot down by Iranian forces since the war began, and three US F-15 fighter jets were destroyed in a “friendly fire incident” over Kuwait early in the conflict, though no crew members were killed in that incident. This latest shootdown is the first confirmed loss of a manned US combat aircraft to hostile Iranian action on Iranian soil, making it a significant milestone — and a propaganda victory — for Tehran.

Broader War Situation: Iran Strikes Gulf States

The shootdown came amid a dramatic widening of the conflict on April 3. Iran launched missile and drone attacks against multiple Gulf states, including Kuwait, where it reportedly struck a power and desalination plant, sparking fires. Saudi Arabia intercepted drones. The UAE intercepted an Iranian missile. An oil refinery was also reported to have been struck, causing additional fires. In Iraq, an Iranian-backed militia claimed responsibility for six attacks on US military bases over a 24-hour period, and two Iranian drones struck a US diplomatic support facility at Baghdad International Airport on Thursday evening.

Yemen’s Houthi movement, which is aligned with Iran, also said it had fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel in coordination with Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon — opening yet another front in the rapidly widening conflict. Israel’s air defences reported intercepting multiple incoming missile barrages throughout the day.

Trump Responds: ‘$1.5 Trillion for Defence’

In Washington, President Donald Trump responded to the escalating war by sending Congress a record-breaking defence budget proposal of $1.5 trillion for fiscal year 2027. The request, which would represent a 42% increase over the current Pentagon budget — the largest year-on-year increase since World War II — was framed as necessary to support the ongoing Iran war effort and to maintain US military superiority. Trump also said the US could reopen the Strait of Hormuz “with a little more time”, brushing aside calls to join the 40+ nation coalition being led by the UK to diplomatically reopen the critical waterway.

India’s Stake: Strategic Concerns Grow

For India, the escalating conflict carries serious strategic implications. India has significant energy interests in the Gulf region, imports substantial crude oil from Gulf producers, and is home to a large diaspora of Indian nationals working across the Gulf states now under Iranian missile threat. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has been in regular session monitoring the situation, and Indian diplomats remain in active contact with both the US and Iranian governments.

The shooting down of a US fighter jet over Iranian territory significantly complicates any near-term path to a ceasefire or diplomatic resolution. If the second crew member is captured by Iranian forces, the situation could take on a new and highly dangerous dimension, with hostage politics adding another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation. The world is watching the skies over Iran with deep anxiety as this conflict continues to escalate beyond the boundaries anyone initially anticipated.
