All 24 Indian Seafarers Safe After Separate Tanker Incidents in Hormuz and Romania, Minister Says

The shipping minister’s update concerns two different vessels and two separate locations. It is not a single incident involving all 24 people.

All 24 Indian seafarers aboard two tankers involved in separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and off Romania are safe, Union shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on October 16.

According to The Times of India’s account of his statement, no casualties or injuries were reported among the crew in the two incidents described.

Which vessels were involved?

Details attributed to the shipping minister’s update
VesselLocation and dateIndian seafarers
MT ST 3, crude-oil tankerStrait of Hormuz, October 1615
YARA J, chemical tankerSulina Anchorage, Romania, October 149

The minister said MT ST 3 was struck by a projectile and YARA J was hit by a drone. The 15 and nine Indian seafarers aboard the respective vessels account for the total of 24.

What the government said it is doing

ANI’s report carried by NDTV said the government was monitoring both incidents and coordinating with the ship-management companies.

What is not established here?

The safety update does not establish the identity of those responsible for either strike. Nor does it mean the two vessels were attacked as part of a single operation. This report does not assign responsibility where the cited information does not do so.

A statement that seafarers are safe should also be kept separate from information about a ship’s damage, onward voyage or any pollution assessment. Those questions require their own verified updates.

Why precise identification matters

When following developments, vessel name, location and date are essential. Combining separate shipping incidents can create a misleading casualty count or give families an incorrect impression of which crew is involved.

Sources: Sonowal’s October 16 statement as reported by The Times of India and ANI/NDTV. The safety assessment is attributed to that update and may require revision if authorities issue further information.
