Fed Raises Interest Rates to 3.75%-4% Range, First Hike Since 2023

Published on

The US Federal Reserve on September 16, 2026 unanimously voted to raise its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, marking the central bank’s first rate increase in three years and a sharp reversal after a prolonged pause.

The Decision

The move takes the federal funds rate up from the previous 3.50%-3.75% range. The unanimous vote signals broad agreement within the rate-setting committee that inflation risks currently outweigh concerns about slowing growth, even as the Fed had held rates steady since 2023.

Why the Fed Moved Now

Officials pointed to persistently sticky inflation and geopolitical tensions pushing energy prices higher as the primary drivers behind the decision. The Fed’s updated projections now put headline inflation at 3.7% for the year, up from a prior estimate of 3.6%, with core inflation revised up to 3.4% from 3.3%. Policymakers also signalled they do not expect inflation to return to the Fed’s 2% target until sometime after 2028.

What Comes Next

The Fed indicated it expects to raise rates once more before the end of the year. Looking further ahead, the committee’s projections for 2026 are split: twelve officials expect two additional hikes, four anticipate three, and two foresee only one. Beyond that, the current outlook points to rates being held steady through 2027, with a single rate cut projected in 2028.

On the growth side, the Fed modestly raised its GDP growth forecast to 2.3% from 2.2% and lowered its projected unemployment rate to 4.1% from 4.3% — in line with the current reading — suggesting officials see the economy as resilient enough to absorb tighter monetary policy for now.

Market and Political Context

The rate hike lands amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty, though the Fed noted that “domestic spending has been resilient” despite that backdrop. The decision also arrives ahead of the US midterm elections, with the administration having pushed for rate cuts and characterised the current inflation pressures as temporary — a view the Fed’s own projections suggest it does not fully share.

Why It Matters Globally

A rate hike from the world’s most influential central bank typically ripples well beyond US borders, affecting everything from emerging-market currencies and capital flows to borrowing costs for governments and companies across Asia. Investors and policymakers in India and the wider region will be watching closely for how the move affects the rupee, portfolio flows and the Reserve Bank of India’s own rate calculus in the months ahead.
