Toor adds to his Asian Games record
Toor, the 2018 Asian Games champion and gold medallist again at Hangzhou, threw 20.64m to finish second behind Iran’s gold medallist, whose 20.81m set a new Games record. It is another major-championship medal for the Punjab thrower, who has been India’s leading shot putter for most of the past decade. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him on the silver.
Barwal’s record run and Prachi’s bronze
In the men’s marathon, Sawan Barwal finished behind Japan’s Yamashita in 2:11:37, which ANI reported as a new national record. On the track, Prachi Choudhary won bronze in a women’s 400m final won by Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser in a Games record 49.20 seconds; Iran’s Zahra Jaree Manojan was second. The Free Press Journal gave Prachi’s time as 53.21 seconds.
More athletics finals ahead
Animesh Kujur reached the men’s 200m final, finishing second in his semi-final in 20.81 seconds, while Gulveer Singh (3:45.79) and Yoonus Shah (3:45.77) both qualified for the men’s 1500m final.
Sunday’s big one: two squash finals
Anahat Singh beat Japan’s Satomi Watanabe 3-2 in the semi-finals, and Abhay Singh beat Pakistan’s Muhammad Irfan 3-0. On Sunday, Anahat faces Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam and Abhay meets Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow. Also in action today are PV Sindhu and Unnati Hooda in the badminton women’s singles quarter-finals, weightlifter Harjinder Kaur (69kg) and several athletics finalists.
