NEW DELHI, October 15: Students applying under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme for 2026–27 have until October 31 to register their applications, the Education Ministry said on Thursday. The reminder follows a regional review workshop held in Bhopal on October 14.
Three deadlines—not one
| Stage | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Registration of applications | October 31, 2026 |
| Institute Nodal Officer verification | November 15, 2026 |
| District Nodal Officer verification | November 30, 2026 |
The scheme provides ₹12,000 annually to eligible students. It supports meritorious students from economically weaker sections, seeking to reduce dropouts after Class VIII and support education through Class XII. Selection examinations are conducted by states and Union Territories; registration, authentication and disbursement take place through the National Scholarship Portal.
What applicants need to understand
Registration and verification are different steps. Submitting an application does not itself show that the school-level and district-level checks are complete, and the later verification deadlines are not an extension of the student registration deadline.
Applicants should review their portal status and raise unresolved application issues with their school or relevant nodal officer. That is more useful than waiting until the district deadline to discover that an earlier step is incomplete.
Does every student qualify?
No. The annual amount applies to eligible awardees under the scheme, not automatically to every student who registers on the portal. The ministry’s reminder is about implementation and verification; it should not be mistaken for an unrestricted new scholarship invitation or a guarantee of selection.
For detailed eligibility and document requirements, families should use the official scheme instructions and the National Scholarship Portal. Avoid relying on an unofficial form or a social-media promise of assured payment.
What the Bhopal review focused on
Officials examined fresh registrations, onboarding and verification by institute and district officers. The practical message is to track the entire application journey: student submission first, official verification next, and payment status separately. The announcement does not give a universal bank-credit date for all awardees.
