Sirpur Enters UNESCO Tentative List: What It Means for Chhattisgarh’s Ancient Heritage

October 21: Sirpur’s inclusion on UNESCO’s tentative list is drawing fresh attention to Chhattisgarh’s archaeological heritage. The official entry records a submission dated September 28, 2026; reports this week describe the development as a step towards possible World Heritage recognition. It is not a final World Heritage inscription.

Key highlights

  • The official entry is titled Sirpur Cultural and Archaeological Landscape.
  • UNESCO records the submission date as September 28, 2026.
  • The site is in Mahasamund district, on the Mahanadi River.
  • A tentative listing and an inscribed World Heritage Site have different status.

What the official entry says

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre lists the proposal under cultural criteria (ii) and (iv), submitted by India’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO. Its description places Sirpur on the eastern bank of the Mahanadi, about 78 kilometres from Raipur.

The proposed landscape includes the Lakshmana temple, Ram temple, Gandheshwar temple, Anandprabhu Kuti Vihara and Swastik Vihara, among other archaeological remains. The entry presents an interconnected cultural landscape, rather than a proposal concerning only one photographed monument.

Why the landscape matters

The Indian Express, reporting on October 20, described remains associated with Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions dating from the fifth to twelfth centuries CE. It highlighted the unusual survival of these different traditions within a shared archaeological setting.

The newspaper also reported that the Chhattisgarh government and the Archaeological Survey of India had been working towards World Heritage recognition. That history of preparation helps explain why a preliminary listing has become a significant regional story.

The Times of India reported on Wednesday that Sirpur had taken a formal preliminary step, describing the seventh-century brick Lakshman temple, monasteries, Surang Tila, sculptures and inscriptions among the landscape’s important features.

What tentative listing does—and does not—establish

The Times of India explained that tentative listing is a necessary preliminary stage before a property can be considered for inscription. It points towards further work on a detailed nomination, conservation planning and evaluation.

The accurate description today is therefore that Sirpur has entered the tentative list. Headlines or travel promotions should not turn that into a claim that UNESCO has already awarded the final World Heritage designation. The official submission date should also remain distinct from the date of this week’s news coverage.

What to watch

The next meaningful milestones would be an announced nomination dossier, clearer conservation and management proposals, and the subsequent evaluation process. Visitors interested in Sirpur can appreciate its existing heritage without assuming a final UNESCO decision has been made. This report does not announce new opening hours, entry fees or transport services, none of which are established by the tentative-list entry.
