Afghanistan-Pakistan War: Taliban Crosses Durand Line, 32 Pakistani Soldiers Killed in Border Strike

Published on

In a dramatic escalation of tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, Taliban forces crossed the disputed Durand Line and conducted a major military strike on Pakistan’s Noor Khan Air Base, killing at least 32 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan claims that up to 400 Afghan fighters were killed in the retaliatory response.

The Taliban-controlled Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) confirmed the attack, with a Taliban minister stating: “We have crossed the Durand Line. The Durand Line is not our border.”

Background:
The Durand Line, established in 1893 during British colonial rule, has been a source of disputes between Afghanistan and Pakistan for decades. Afghanistan has historically never formally recognized the Durand Line as the legitimate international boundary. This conflict has intensified under Taliban rule since 2021.

Noor Khan Air Base Attack:
The strike targeted Pakistan’s Noor Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi, which is one of Pakistan’s key strategic military installations. The attack represents one of the most significant cross-border operations in recent history.

Pakistan’s Response:
The Pakistani military claimed in a statement that its forces killed approximately 400 Afghan fighters in the engagement. Pakistan has lodged strong diplomatic protests and threatened retaliation. The Pakistani National Security Committee (NSC) held an emergency meeting following the incident.

Regional Implications:
This conflict comes at a particularly difficult time as the world’s attention is focused on the Middle East crisis. The Afghanistan-Pakistan border conflict has the potential to destabilize South Asia and draw in regional powers including India, China, and Iran.

India is monitoring the situation closely. Given India’s complex relationships with both Afghanistan and Pakistan, any escalation in the region could have significant implications for Indian security interests.

The United States has called for restraint from both sides. The UN Special Representative for Afghanistan has urged dialogue to prevent further escalation.

This border conflict underscores the ongoing instability in South Asia and the unresolved political disputes that continue to threaten regional peace.
