Delhi Red Fort Blast Case: NIA Court Extends Custody Of Accused, Investigation Reaches Critical Stage

Published on

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the deadly Red Fort blast case, one of the most significant terror attacks in recent years in the Indian capital, continues to progress with the special NIA court at Patiala House granting extended custody and investigation time to the agency. The November 10, 2025 blast near the Red Fort in New Delhi claimed the lives of 15 people and left several others injured, sending shockwaves through the nation and raising serious concerns about the vulnerability of one of India’s most iconic national monuments.

The November 2025 Red Fort Blast: What Happened

On the night of November 10, 2025, a powerful explosion rocked the area near the Red Fort in Old Delhi. The blast, which occurred in a congested neighbourhood close to the historic Mughal monument, resulted in mass casualties and extensive property damage. The nature of the explosion — its precision, timing, and the type of explosive used — immediately pointed to a professionally planned terror attack rather than an accidental incident. Security agencies were placed on high alert across Delhi and other major cities, and the case was swiftly handed to the NIA for its national security implications.

Initial arrests were made quickly. The first accused, Amir Rashid Ali, in whose name the car used in the blast was registered, was arrested within days. Another accused, Jasir Bilal Wani alias Danish, who provided technical and logistical support to the bomber, was also taken into custody. As the probe widened, NIA arrested four more prime accused from Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, on production orders obtained from the District Sessions Judge at Patiala House Court. These accused were identified as being from Kashmir and appeared to have coordinated with networks operating across state lines.

NIA Investigation and Court Proceedings

The investigation by the NIA has been multi-layered, involving forensic analysis, digital surveillance, financial tracking, and the interrogation of accused persons from multiple states. In February 2026, a Special NIA court at Patiala House extended the investigation period by 45 days, granting the agency more time to complete its probe. Although the agency had sought a 90-day extension citing the complexity of the evidence and the need to track financial and digital links, the court partially allowed the NIA’s application. The judicial custody of seven accused was extended by the court until mid-March, with accused Shoaib produced before the court physically and the remaining six appearing through video conferencing.

The NIA has been systematically interrogating individual accused to ascertain their specific roles in planning and executing the attack. The court permitted the agency to interrogate accused Yasir Ahmad Dar for 10 additional days, while the custody of co-accused Dr. Bilal Naseer Malla was also extended. Four more accused were identified as Dr. Muzammil Shakeel Ganai of Pulwama, Dr. Adeel Ahmed Rather of Anantnag, Dr. Shaheen Saeed of Lucknow, and Mufti Irfan Ahmad Wagay of Shopian. This unusually high number of doctors and educated professionals among the accused has drawn significant attention, suggesting a sophisticated network with access to technical expertise.

Links to Cross-Border Terror Networks

NIA’s investigation has pointed to a web of connections linking the accused to terror networks operating from across the border. The agency believes the attack was meticulously planned over months, with financial channels used to fund the operation traced to international sources. Digital evidence recovered from the accused’s devices reportedly contains communications that connect the cell to handlers outside India. The involvement of accused from Jammu & Kashmir, Lucknow, and Shopian indicates a multi-city coordination that the NIA is now working to fully map.

Security Implications and Government Response

The Red Fort blast case has forced a comprehensive review of security around heritage sites, tourist monuments, and crowded areas in Delhi. The Delhi Police and Central paramilitary forces have beefed up surveillance and deployment around the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and adjoining areas. The Union Home Ministry has also reviewed security protocols for nationally important monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The case has underscored the need for better intelligence sharing between state police, central agencies, and intelligence bureaus to prevent such attacks in the future.

Conclusion

The Delhi Red Fort blast case remains one of the most significant terror investigations in recent Indian history. With the NIA continuing its probe, extending custody periods, and uncovering links to cross-border networks, the full picture of the conspiracy is yet to emerge. The case highlights both the continuing threat of coordinated terror attacks on Indian soil and the capacity of the NIA to pursue multi-state, cross-border investigations. As the case moves toward trial, the focus will shift to the chargesheet and how the courts weigh the evidence gathered by India’s premier counter-terrorism agency.
