INDIA Bloc Meeting in Delhi: 23 Opposition Parties Unite Amid Growing Internal Strains and DMK Boycott

Published on

In a significant show of opposition unity, 23 political parties gathered in New Delhi on Monday, June 8, 2026, for the INDIA bloc’s ‘janbandhan’ meeting at the Constitution Club. The meeting, held after a considerable gap, marks the alliance’s first major huddle since recent assembly election setbacks and growing internal tensions that have tested the coalition’s resolve.

A Coalition Under Pressure

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed that 23 political parties had confirmed their participation in what the alliance has branded as the ‘INDIA janbandhan’ gathering. “Like India, the INDIA janbandhan continues to stand united through its diversity,” Ramesh stated in a post on X, projecting an image of solidarity despite visible cracks.

The meeting comes at a crucial juncture for the opposition alliance, which has been grappling with internal disagreements and strategic differences among its constituent parties. While the formal agenda remained undisclosed initially, sources indicated that discussions would center on the alliance’s future strategy, including preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and a coordinated response to the BJP-led government on national issues.

High-Profile Attendance and Notable Absences

The meeting saw participation from several heavyweight opposition leaders. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi were present alongside West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav.

However, the absence of certain key allies cast a shadow over the proceedings. Most notably, the DMK announced it would not participate in the meeting, marking a significant setback for the opposition alliance. The Dravidian party’s decision to boycott the gathering stems from ongoing tensions with the Congress party over political coordination and strategic differences.

Reports also suggest that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chose not to attend the gathering, further highlighting the fragmentation within the alliance. DMK sources have warned that more parties could soon exit the coalition, raising fresh questions about the bloc’s long-term viability and unity.

CPI(M) Seeks Clarification

Adding to the alliance’s woes, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) wrote to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge ahead of the meeting, seeking clarification over repeated allegations by Congress leaders regarding an alleged understanding between CPI(M) and the BJP during the Kerala Assembly election campaign. CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby expressed concern that such remarks could weaken trust and unity within the opposition alliance.

The letter underscored the delicate nature of inter-party relations within the INDIA bloc, where mutual suspicions and divergent regional interests often threaten to overshadow the common agenda of opposing the ruling BJP.

Key Issues on the Agenda

During the meeting, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized that the mandate is against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, characterizing recent electoral outcomes as a significant political loss for the ruling dispensation. The opposition leaders deliberated on several critical issues that have emerged as potential rallying points for the alliance.

Central to the discussions were concerns about the integrity of India’s democratic processes. Jairam Ramesh accused the Central Government of “snatching away the right to vote for millions of Indians” and “assaulting the Constitution daily.” The opposition also raised allegations about the conduct of the Election Commission and the alleged misuse of investigative agencies to target opposition leaders.

Other pressing issues discussed included the NEET paper leak controversy, which has sparked nationwide outrage and protests, alleged irregularities in CBSE examinations, spiraling inflation, and concerns about government policies affecting livelihoods. The opposition also criticized the Modi government’s foreign policy, accusing it of compromising national interests.

Electoral Strategy for 2029

A major focus of the gathering was chalking out a roadmap for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. With assembly elections in several key states scheduled before the general polls, the INDIA bloc sought to develop a joint strategy to maximize seat-sharing arrangements and present a united front against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The alliance, which had initially brought together more than three dozen parties, now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust among its constituents while presenting a coherent alternative narrative to voters. Political analysts suggest that the reduction from approximately 36-37 parties in previous meetings to just 23 participants signals serious organizational challenges for the coalition.

The BJP’s Perspective

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to seize upon the visible fractures within the INDIA bloc to reinforce its narrative of a stable and united NDA versus a fractious and opportunistic opposition alliance. BJP leaders have consistently characterized the INDIA bloc as a coalition driven purely by electoral convenience rather than ideological coherence or programmatic unity.

The visible absence of DMK and AAP from the meeting provides ammunition to the ruling party’s argument that regional parties prioritize their own interests over collective opposition politics.

What Lies Ahead for the Alliance

Despite the challenges, Congress leaders have sought to project confidence in the alliance’s future. Jairam Ramesh emphasized that the parties remain united in their opposition to what they characterize as authoritarian tendencies of the Modi government, attacks on constitutional values, and economic policies that hurt common citizens.

However, the real test for the INDIA bloc will come in the months ahead as it navigates the complex terrain of regional politics, manages competing ambitions of its constituent parties, and attempts to present a viable alternative governance model to the electorate. The alliance must address fundamental questions about leadership, decision-making structures, resource allocation for campaigns, and most critically, seat-sharing formulas for upcoming elections.

The Path Forward

Political observers suggest that the INDIA bloc’s ability to remain relevant will depend on its capacity to move beyond mere anti-BJP rhetoric and offer concrete policy alternatives on issues that matter to voters—employment, inflation, education, healthcare, and agrarian distress.

The June 8 meeting at the Constitution Club represented both an opportunity and a challenge for the opposition alliance. While it demonstrated that a significant number of parties remain committed to the idea of opposition unity, the notable absences and public airing of grievances underscored the fragile nature of the coalition.

As India moves closer to the 2029 general elections, the opposition faces a critical choice: either strengthen internal cohesion and present a credible alternative to the ruling dispensation, or risk further fragmentation that could leave the field open for continued BJP dominance in national politics. The coming months will reveal which path the INDIA bloc ultimately chooses.
