October 29: Microsoft reported revenue of $92.3 billion for the quarter ended September 30, up 19% year on year, in results released on October 28. Azure revenue grew 48%, while Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $63.9 billion, highlighting the importance of cloud demand to the company’s fiscal 2027 first-quarter performance.

Key highlights

  • Operating income rose 21% to $45.9 billion.
  • Reported net income was $36.6 billion; adjusted net income was $36.4 billion.
  • Azure growth was 48%; Microsoft Cloud revenue grew 30%.
  • The release reports global results, not a separate Asia revenue total.

The financial results at a glance

MetricFiscal 2027 first quarter
RevenueUS$92.3 billion; up 19%
Operating incomeUS$45.9 billion; up 21%
GAAP net incomeUS$36.6 billion; up 32%
Non-GAAP net incomeUS$36.4 billion; up 18%
GAAP diluted earnings per shareUS$4.92
Non-GAAP diluted earnings per shareUS$4.89

The quarter ended September 30, 2026. The fiscal-year label and the reporting date should be kept separate: this is fiscal 2027 Q1, not a forecast of results for a quarter that has yet to occur.

Why reported and adjusted growth differ

Microsoft’s non-GAAP presentation removes the impact of investments in OpenAI. Its reconciliation reports a US$207 million net gain from those investments in the latest quarter, compared with a US$3.086 billion net loss in the corresponding earlier quarter.

That changes the comparison base. The 32% reported net-income growth and 18% adjusted growth therefore answer different questions. Neither percentage should be paired with the other measure’s profit figure without explaining the adjustment.

Microsoft presents the adjustment as additional information alongside its reported accounts. For a reader comparing performance over time, the useful discipline is to keep the same accounting measure on both sides of the comparison.

The cloud contribution and an important overlap

Microsoft said Cloud revenue increased 30% and Azure revenue increased 48%. Its Agents and Infra segment generated US$76.8 billion, while Devices and Consumer generated US$15.5 billion. The latter segment’s revenue declined 3%.

Our calculation: US$63.9 billion divided by total revenue of US$92.3 billion is approximately 69.2%. This indicates the scale of the company’s supplementary Cloud revenue measure. Cloud is not an additional segment to add on top of the segment revenues; doing so would double-count overlapping activity.

Different percentages in the release also use different definitions. A constant-currency comparison adjusts for exchange-rate effects, while a reported comparison uses the actual reporting framework. A growth figure needs its metric and comparison basis to remain meaningful.

What the results mean for Asian customers

The release is a global financial report. It does not show that every Asian market, product or customer category expanded at the same rate. Nor does a revenue result establish the availability or price of a particular cloud service in a particular country.

For an Asian business evaluating cloud infrastructure, the relevant commercial information still includes the services available in its region, data-location needs, contract terms and total operating cost. Company-wide growth provides context, rather than a substitute for that assessment.

What to watch

Future earnings releases and the company’s detailed financial disclosures will show whether the different business trends persist. Readers tracking AI demand should distinguish financial revenue, contracted future obligations and actual infrastructure capacity: each is a different measure, and none can be substituted for the others without explanation.
