North Korea Tests Missiles from New 5,000-Tonne Warship: Kim Jong-un Escalates Military Threat

Published on

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un personally oversaw a ballistic missile test launch from the country’s newest 5,000-tonne destroyer-class warship on March 5, 2026, marking a significant advancement in Pyongyang’s naval strike capabilities that has alarmed South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

The test, which North Korea’s state media KCNA described as a “successful demonstration of our invincible naval power,” involved the launch of multiple short-to-medium range ballistic missiles from the vessel’s vertical launch system in the waters off the eastern coast.

A New Era of North Korean Naval Power

The warship, reportedly designated the “Paektusan-class,” is the largest surface combatant North Korea has ever built. Displacing approximately 5,000 tonnes, it is capable of carrying cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and now surface-to-surface ballistic missiles.

Military analysts at the Institute for Strategic Studies noted that the warship represents a doctrinal shift for North Korea, which has traditionally focused on ground-based missile systems. “This shows Kim is building a force that can threaten targets at sea and on land simultaneously,” said one expert.

The vessel was first revealed publicly in 2025 during a naval parade in Wonsan, but this is its first live-fire weapons demonstration.

Regional Reactions

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff condemned the test as a “serious provocation” and called an emergency meeting, while Japan scrambled fighter jets as a precautionary measure. The US Indo-Pacific Command called the launch “destabilizing” and said it was monitoring the situation closely.

China and Russia, both permanent UN Security Council members, have not condemned the test, making meaningful international sanctions unlikely.

Context: Exploiting the Iran War

Analysts believe Kim Jong-un is deliberately timing these provocations to coincide with Washington’s distraction with the US-Iran War. With American military assets focused on the Persian Gulf region, North Korea sees a strategic window to accelerate its weapons development without facing a strong US deterrent response.

Conclusion

North Korea’s successful missile test from its new warship marks another milestone in its military expansion. As global attention remains fixed on the Middle East, Pyongyang is seizing the opportunity to demonstrate that it remains a serious regional military power with growing capabilities.
