US Economy Grows 3.4% in Third Quarter: What the GDP Estimate Means for Asia

3 min read

October 29: The US economy expanded at a 3.4% annualised rate in the third quarter of 2026, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said in its advance estimate released today. Growth accelerated from 2.2% in the second quarter, with investment, household spending and government expenditure contributing to the increase.

Key highlights

  • The estimate covers July–September and is adjusted for inflation.
  • The unannualised increase from the preceding quarter was 0.8%.
  • Private domestic final sales rose at a 4.9% annualised rate.
  • A second estimate is scheduled for November 25.

The growth measures at a glance

BEA measure, annualisedQ2 2026Q3 2026
Real GDP growth2.2%3.4%
Real final sales to private domestic purchasers4.6%4.9%
PCE price-index increase5.0%2.1%
PCE price increase excluding food and energy3.3%2.5%

These are quarter-to-quarter annualised measures. The price rows are not September’s year-on-year inflation readings. Keeping the period and calculation method attached to each figure is essential when comparing the release with other countries’ statistics.

Why 3.4% and 0.8% describe the same quarter

BEA’s methodology explains that an annualised rate expresses what would happen over a year if one quarter’s pace continued for four quarters, with compounding. It provides a common scale for quarterly comparisons but does not forecast the next year.

The unannualised number answers a more immediate question: how much larger was real output in July–September than in April–June? The 0.8% figure is rounded, so applying the annualisation formula to that rounded number will not reproduce the headline exactly.

Our calculation: the headline annualised growth rate accelerated by 1.2 percentage points, from 2.2% to 3.4%. That is a change in the growth rate, rather than an additional 1.2% increase in the level of output.

What the composition says about demand

BEA reported stronger investment and spending alongside lower exports and higher imports. Its technical notes identify computers and peripheral equipment among the contributors to equipment investment. Imports are deducted in the GDP calculation because spending measures can include goods produced abroad.

Private domestic final sales combine consumption and private fixed investment. Looking at that measure alongside headline GDP helps separate demand within the economy from changes involving inventories, government and net trade. A single headline can conceal different movements across those components.

The connection for Asian exporters

For Asian manufacturers, the practical question is which products US customers are purchasing. Stronger equipment demand can be relevant to electronics supply chains, while a broad GDP increase alone cannot establish the order book of a particular exporter. Country-level trade and product data remain necessary for that assessment.

The release also needs to be separated from interest-rate and currency decisions. A business paid in dollars may face different exposures from one borrowing in dollars. The GDP estimate supplies macroeconomic context; actual financing terms, exchange rates and customer contracts supply the transaction-level information.

Readers following policy can also see the separate Federal Reserve decision this week. GDP and monetary policy are related subjects with distinct publication schedules.

What to watch

The November 25 second estimate will incorporate more complete information. Later estimates can revise both the growth rate and its composition. For cross-country comparisons, check whether the other statistic is quarterly, annualised or year-on-year before placing the percentages side by side.
