The five-day-old conflict between Israel and Iran has escalated sharply, with over 248 people confirmed dead — 224 in Iran and 24 in Israel — as Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, television headquarters, and military installations. World leaders at the G7 summit in Canada called for de-escalation even as the United States under President Donald Trump signalled support for Israel’s right to defend itself.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Israel strikes Iranian nuclear facilities at Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow; IAEA confirms direct impacts on underground halls at Natanz
  • Death toll: 224 killed in Iran, 24 in Israel over five days of conflict
  • Israeli military assassinates Iran’s army chief of staff, Ali Shadmani, in Tehran strike
  • Israel bombs Iranian state television headquarters; multiple staff killed
  • G7 leaders call for de-escalation while affirming Israel’s right to self-defence
  • Iran retaliates with missile strikes on northern Israel and Tel Aviv, targeting claimed military intelligence and Mossad sites
  • Trump leaves G7 early, directs National Security team to convene in Situation Room
  • WHO warns of severe civilian impact and health risks from nuclear site strikes
  • Over 600 foreign nationals flee Iran via Azerbaijan; multiple countries advise citizens to leave

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

The current Israeli-Iranian conflict, which entered its fifth day on June 17, 2025, represents a dramatic and direct military confrontation between the two long-standing adversaries. While the two nations had previously engaged in proxy warfare through groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, this marks the most open direct warfare between them in modern history.

Israel launched its initial strikes citing Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme and ongoing ballistic missile threats. Over the past five days, Israel has systematically targeted Iran’s missile launch sites, storage facilities, military command centres, and now nuclear research locations. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated they targeted 12 missile launch and storage sites in the latest round, with locations including Isfahan province and the city of Tabriz.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that satellite imagery analysis showed direct impacts on the underground halls of the Natanz nuclear facility. The IAEA noted no changes at the Isfahan and Fordow sites as of its latest analysis. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned about severe risks to civilian health from potential radioactive contamination stemming from strikes on nuclear installations.

Iran has responded with retaliatory strikes, claiming to have targeted a military intelligence centre and a Mossad operations planning site in Israel. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also stated that strikes were directed at Israeli airbases used to launch attacks against Iran. According to Iranian military reports, Iran intercepted 28 Israeli aircraft in a single day, including reconnaissance drones.

GLOBAL REACTIONS AND DIPLOMATIC DEVELOPMENTS

At the G7 summit in Canada, world leaders issued a joint statement calling for a “de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East” while simultaneously affirming Israel’s right to defend itself. However, the summit’s unity was tested when President Trump abruptly departed early, citing the escalating Middle East crisis, and instructed his National Security team to reconvene in the Situation Room.

Trump, posting on Truth Social, claimed the United States had “complete and total control of skies over Iran,” a statement that drew widespread scrutiny given it was unverified. He also issued a thinly veiled threat regarding the potential assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, demanding Iran’s “unconditional surrender.”

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland in a show of European resolve and separately voiced opposition to military operations that could trigger regime change in Iran, warning of potential “chaos.” Jordan’s King Abdullah II described the strikes as “a threat to people everywhere.” Qatar condemned Israel’s actions as an “uncalculated measure” with “dire repercussions.”

Russia expressed willingness to mediate but noted that Israel had shown no interest in negotiations. China and South Korea joined a growing list of countries advising citizens to leave both Israel and Iran. Over 600 foreign nationals, including Russians, Germans, Spaniards, Italians, Romanians, and Americans, crossed from Iran into Azerbaijan in a single day.

Yemen’s Houthi political bureau chief pledged that the group would “intervene to assist Tehran against Zionist aggressions,” signalling a potential widening of the conflict.

WHY IT MATTERS

This conflict is historic in its scale and directness. A full-scale war between Israel and Iran — two nuclear-capable or near-nuclear states in the most volatile region of the world — carries massive global consequences. The targeting of Iranian nuclear infrastructure has raised unprecedented concerns about nuclear safety, radioactive contamination, and long-term health impacts on civilian populations. India, which maintains close diplomatic and energy ties with both Israel and Iran, is watching events closely. India’s oil imports from the region and the safety of its large diaspora in the Middle East make this conflict of direct national concern.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

U.S. Vice President JD Vance suggested that Trump may take “further actions to halt Iranian enrichment,” indicating the possibility of American military engagement. If Iran opts for a massive escalatory response, the Houthis engage from Yemen, and Hezbollah enters from Lebanon, the conflict could spiral into a multi-front regional war. International mediators, including the United Nations and Qatar, are working to establish a ceasefire framework, but no talks have formally begun as of June 17, 2025.
