A train carrying approximately 440 metric tonnes of buffer onions is expected to reach Agartala by October 18, 2026, as the Centre expands its Kanda Express distribution network in the Northeast.
The Department of Consumer Affairs announced the consignment on October 16, saying it is being supplied under the Price Stabilization Fund ahead of the festive season.
Where the supplies are intended to go
The intervention is expected to improve coverage across seven Tripura districts: Dhalai, South Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, West Tripura, Gomati and Sepahijala.
The department separately reported more than 2,800 tonnes of buffer onions supplied across the Northeast through two rail rakes and 44 truck consignments. Its detailed breakdown lists 840 tonnes and 452 tonnes in the two rakes, plus 1,513.46 tonnes by road.
What the price figures show
The ministry said the national average mandi price had moderated from approximately ₹3,600 per quintal in September to around ₹3,300 in October. These are wholesale-market figures, not a promised retail selling price for the incoming Tripura stock.
It also reported retail declines of ₹1–₹13 per kilogram in 211 cities over two weeks. That range describes reported changes across different places; it does not mean every consumer will see the largest reduction.
Arrival remains the next milestone
The October 18 date is an expected arrival, not confirmation of delivery. Distribution to shops and the eventual local price will need to be checked after the consignment reaches its destination.
