Abhijeet Dipke Detained Ahead of CJP Tiranga March in Delhi: What Police and the Organiser Said

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke was detained in Delhi on October 16 while leaving to attend the proposed Lehra Do Tiranga march at Connaught Place, according to The Tribune’s evening report, which cited police sources.

The development followed an earlier police notice directing him not to hold the planned gathering at Central Park. This report reflects the sources available on the evening of October 16; it does not establish his subsequent custody or release status.

The police explanation

According to Times of India’s account of the notice, police cited prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the absence of permission for the proposed assembly.

The reported notice distinguished displaying the national flag from organising an unauthorised crowd or march in an area subject to restrictions. Police also cited the rights of traders, commuters and other citizens. NDMC had announced Central Park’s closure on October 16 and 17 for administrative reasons.

Dipke’s response

Dipke defended peaceful protest as a democratic right, Times of India reported. During the encounter described by The Tribune, he questioned what law he had broken and whether he could travel somewhere other than New Delhi.

What the reports do not establish

Reported detention is not a finding of guilt. The accounts cited here do not establish a conviction or a final judicial determination about this incident. Claims about protest attendance, violence or the intentions of participants require separate evidence and should not be inferred from Dipke’s detention.
