NHRC Seeks Maharashtra Report on Alleged Borewell Contamination in Nashik

The commission has asked for a report within two weeks and sought comments from the state pollution control board. The allegations are still subject to examination.

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a report alleging borewell water contamination in Dattanagar, near Nashik’s Ambad Industrial Area, Maharashtra.

In its October 16 press release, the NHRC said it had issued notice to Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary seeking a detailed report within two weeks. It also sought comments from the Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board.

What is alleged?

The commission cited a media report alleging seepage of chemical-laden industrial effluent into borewell water and said residents had reportedly received contaminated water for two months. Its intervention followed a report carried on October 7.

The NHRC said the reported circumstances, if true, raised serious human-rights concerns. That conditional wording matters: the release records the basis for seeking answers, not a completed scientific or judicial determination.

What a notice does—and does not—establish

A request for a report is a step in examining a complaint or reported incident. It should not be presented as proof that a named factory caused contamination or that liability has already been fixed.

This article does not identify an individual industrial unit as responsible. The materials examined do not establish such a finding.

The questions the response should address

Important points for follow-up include sampling locations and dates, laboratory findings, the suspected source, any action taken and arrangements for a safe water supply. These are questions for the authorities’ response, not findings made by this publication.

Readers should not use a news report to decide whether their own borewell is safe. That requires information specific to the water source and appropriate testing; the notice does not supply results for every household in the area.
