France Protests: Ministry Reports 1,314 Detentions in New Tally

October 25: France’s Interior Ministry has issued a new provisional account of Saturday’s demonstrations, reporting 1,314 detentions in its national tally at 7.30 am on Sunday. The release provides a substantive follow-up to the earlier preparations and union statements. It is an official account, not a final judicial outcome or an independently verified count of every incident.

Key highlights

  • The ministry’s national detention figure is provisional and covers the October 24 mobilisation.
  • The government and CGT give different attendance estimates; neither should be presented as a jointly agreed total.
  • CGT continues to call for a November 5 strike and demonstrations.
  • Local restrictions and service notices must be checked by city and date.

What the new official tally establishes

The Interior Ministry counts 289 public-space actions and 410,000 participants, including 110,000 in Paris. It reports 53 injured members of the security forces, 75 fire-service interventions and 24 looted businesses. The ministry says the figures remain provisional and investigations have been opened.

These categories need to remain separate. Fire-service interventions are not a casualty count; detentions are not convictions; the figure for injured officers is not a total for injured demonstrators or the public. The release does not establish the guilt of any particular detainee.

Attendance: two estimates, two named sources

CGT’s own statement says young people, workers and retirees mobilised against living costs and for decent conditions of study. It also criticises prohibitions, route changes and police conduct. Those criticisms are the organiser’s position and are attributed here rather than treated as independently resolved findings.

Averaging the two attendance figures would not produce a verified third figure. The documents come from different institutions with different roles, and the reporting points are not identical. The useful information for readers is who supplied each number and what event and period it describes.

Why November 5 remains the next political marker

CGT renews its appeal for a major strike and demonstrations on November 5 and asks workers to organise workplace meetings. This date was already announced earlier in October; the new statement reinforces the call rather than introducing it for the first time.

A strike appeal is a plan for future action. It is not evidence that every railway service, airport, school or business will close. Those practical effects require notices from the relevant operators or institutions, often nearer the date. Readers should distinguish a national mobilisation announcement from a specific cancellation.

Paris restrictions are local and time-limited

Paris’s seventh-arrondissement town hall publishes restrictions covering a defined part of the district until 6 am on October 26. Its notice also identifies overnight limits on the movement of unaccompanied minors in the relevant perimeter. These measures should be read with the accompanying streets and dates, not as a nationwide curfew or a ban applying to all adults across Paris.

The city tourism office’s October 23 advisory likewise directs businesses and visitors to local security orders and live transport information. For an Asian visitor arriving in France, that is a more useful planning approach than assuming that all of Europe has stopped functioning.

How this differs from the France–Italy background report

Our earlier France–Italy report explains the union’s strike call, economic context and previously documented Italian security decisions. This follow-up focuses on France’s newly published official tally. Its detention figures must not be transferred to Italy or described as a Europe-wide total.

The events can be compared without assuming a single organisation, identical demands or the same policing rules across countries. Keeping national data distinct also prevents a striking headline from obscuring which authority has actually confirmed a development.

What to watch next

The next material developments are a consolidated official tally, dated responses from organisers, verified outcomes in individual investigations and operational notices before November 5. Any revised figure should retain its source and time. Neither this article nor an archival photograph establishes what happened in an individual disputed encounter.
