India and Finland Sign Major Deals on AI, Quantum Computing and Clean Energy: Key Highlights

Published on

India and Finland have signed several landmark bilateral agreements covering artificial intelligence, quantum computing, clean energy, and digital infrastructure during a high-level summit on March 6, 2026, significantly deepening the two nations’ strategic partnership.

The agreements were signed during Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s state visit to New Delhi, where he held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and key ministers.

Key Agreements Signed

  1. AI Research and Development: A joint India-Finland AI Research Center will be established, with Finnish companies like Nokia and F-Secure partnering with Indian institutions including IIT Delhi and IISc Bengaluru to develop AI applications in healthcare, agriculture, and defense.
  2. Quantum Computing Partnership: Finland, home to IQM Quantum Computers, will collaborate with India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) on quantum computing hardware and algorithm development.
  3. Clean Energy Cooperation: Finland will share expertise in nuclear small modular reactors (SMRs) and hydrogen energy with India, supporting India’s clean energy transition goals ahead of 2030 targets.
  4. Digital Trade and Cybersecurity: Both countries agreed to establish a joint cybersecurity task force to address growing threats to critical digital infrastructure.
  5. Education and Startup Ecosystem: Finland will offer 200 research fellowships annually to Indian scientists and engineers, while Finnish startup ecosystem programs will partner with Indian unicorn incubators.

Strategic Importance

The India-Finland partnership gains strategic significance amid the global restructuring of technology supply chains. As the US-Iran War disrupts Middle East trade routes, European nations like Finland see India as a vital alternative economic partner and supply chain anchor.

PM Modi noted: “India and Finland share democratic values and technological ambitions. This partnership will help both nations stay ahead in the global technology race.”

Conclusion

The India-Finland technology agreements of March 6, 2026 represent a major step in bilateral relations. From AI to quantum computing and clean energy, this partnership is set to generate significant research, trade, and employment opportunities for both nations over the next decade.
