India has notified revised export duties on petrol and diesel for the next fortnight, effective October 16, 2026. The change does not alter the existing excise rates on petrol and diesel supplied for domestic consumption.
According to Akashvani’s report on the Finance Ministry notification, the export duty is ₹2.50 per litre for petrol and ₹8.50 per litre for diesel. Aviation turbine fuel remains at ₹10.50 per litre.
The announced export rates
| Fuel | Export duty per litre |
|---|---|
| Petrol | ₹2.50 |
| Diesel | ₹8.50 |
| Aviation turbine fuel | ₹10.50, unchanged |
Why this is not a retail-price announcement
An export levy concerns fuel leaving the country. The notification explicitly leaves domestic-consumption excise rates unchanged, so the headline figures should not be treated as a corresponding increase or reduction at filling stations.
The rates are reviewed against average international crude and fuel prices since the previous review. Akashvani said the preceding revision took effect on October 1.
The immediate change is to export taxation. The notification alone does not establish a new retail pump price, a change to state taxes or a reduction in an individual household’s fuel bill.
