Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Flagged Off: Route, Timings and Weekly Off Days

November 2: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on November 1, according to the Ministry of Railways. The ministry has announced an overnight timetable between Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal Bengaluru and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, with services six days a week in each direction. The weekly non-running day differs by direction, making it an important detail for passengers planning a journey.

Key highlights

  • The announced Bengaluru departure is 19:45, reaching Mumbai at 11:55 the next day.
  • The Mumbai departure is 20:10, reaching Bengaluru at 12:00 the following day.
  • The Bengaluru-originating service does not run on Mondays; the Mumbai-originating service does not run on Tuesdays.
  • The route connects named points in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

What has been officially announced

The railway ministry’s November 1 release identifies the terminal pair as SMVT Bengaluru and CSMT Mumbai. This matters because Bengaluru and Mumbai each have multiple major railway stations. A passenger should search for the correct terminal rather than assume the train starts at a more familiar station in either city.

The service was launched in the presence of Union ministers and Karnataka representatives. The ministry described it as an additional modern overnight option for professionals, entrepreneurs, students, traders and tourists. Those are the government’s stated objectives; the release does not establish actual occupancy or passenger satisfaction after regular operation.

The timetable and the two different off days

The announced 19:45 departure from Bengaluru reaches Mumbai at 11:55 on the following day. In the opposite direction, the train leaves Mumbai at 20:10 and arrives in Bengaluru at 12:00 the next day. Both are overnight journeys, so the arrival date is one day later than the departure date.

Our calculation: the published end-to-end timings imply 16 hours 10 minutes from Bengaluru to Mumbai and 15 hours 50 minutes in the return direction. These are timetable durations, calculated across midnight. They are not a promise of the actual running time on a particular day.

The ministry says the train runs six days a week, excluding Monday in the Bengaluru-originating direction and Tuesday in the Mumbai-originating direction. Because November 2 is a Monday, a reader should be especially careful about interpreting a launch headline as confirmation of a Bengaluru departure today. The direction-specific schedule, booking system and date of travel must be checked together.

Which areas the route connects

The release names Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Wadi, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune and Kalyan among important points along the route. Together, they place the service across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, rather than making it solely a connection between the two terminal cities.

For passengers from North Karnataka and the intermediate cities, the relevant question is the timetable at their own station. The end-to-end departure and arrival times do not provide the boarding time at Pune, Solapur or another route point. Travellers should confirm the current station-level timetable before arranging local transport or a connection.

The ministry’s account also discussed future rail links and proposed improvements elsewhere in Karnataka. Those proposals are separate from this service. A future travel-time ambition for another corridor should not be presented as the running time or operating speed of the Bengaluru–Mumbai sleeper.

What still needs to be checked before booking

The announcement gives a route and timetable, but this report does not substitute for the live reservation system. Passengers should verify the train number, operating date, available class, fare, boarding station and ticket status through official railway booking channels. No unverified fare or train number is added here.

A ceremonial flag-off and the availability of a bookable seat for a specific date are different facts. The ministry release alone should not be used to guarantee that every planned departure is already open for booking. Similarly, a new premium service does not remove the need to check luggage, cancellation and boarding conditions attached to the ticket.

For business travellers, arrival near midday may have different implications from an early-morning arrival. Comparing total journey time—including getting to SMVT or CSMT and onward travel from the arrival terminal—will be more useful than comparing only the headline train journey with an airline flight time.

What to watch

The new service adds another overnight rail option on an economically important corridor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s separate November 1 message also highlighted benefits for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, especially for students and professionals.

The practical next checks are the regular booking calendar, station-level times and actual service performance. Until those are checked for the intended journey, the safe conclusion is specific: the train has been flagged off, the ministry has published its timetable, and the two directions have different weekly off days.
