November 1: The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games programme brings the Olympic movement’s youth event to Africa for the first time, with the main Games dates set for October 31 to November 13. For Asian sports fans, it is also the next chapter of an event whose first two summer editions were hosted in Singapore and Nanjing.

- The programme provides for approximately 2,700 athletes and 153 medal events.

The IOC media kit distinguishes the main Games period from the wider competition calendar. That explains why a sport can begin before the opening ceremony without changing the announced October 31 start date.
The programme’s athlete numbers and quotas should not be confused with a confirmed count of everyone who has arrived or competed. This explainer follows the official event programme; it does not report an unverified medal result or ceremony outcome.
How the event connects with Asia
The first Summer Youth Olympics took place in Singapore in 2010, followed by Nanjing, China, in 2014 and Buenos Aires in 2018. The IOC identifies Dakar as the fourth summer edition. The separate Winter Youth Olympics most recently took place in Gangwon, South Korea, in 2024.
That history gives Asian audiences a direct connection with the competition’s development. It also helps explain a common source of confusion: the Youth Olympics are a distinct event, rather than another edition of the senior Summer Olympics or the Asian Games.
For followers of a particular Asian team, the useful information will be its national Olympic committee’s confirmed entries and the official start lists. A sport being on the programme does not establish that a particular country has qualified an athlete in it.
Which formats to expect
The IOC’s official event programme lists swimming, athletics, archery, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo and wushu among the competition sports. Several familiar sports appear in formats that differ from larger senior tournaments: basketball is 3×3, football is futsal, and rowing includes coastal beach sprints.
The programme also includes mixed events, such as archery’s mixed team and table tennis mixed doubles. The distinction between a sport, a discipline and a medal event is useful when reading a timetable. One sport can contain many separate competitions, while an engagement activity is not necessarily a medal contest.
Readers should therefore check the specific event name rather than infer the rules or team size from a broad sport label. A schedule entry for 3×3 basketball, for example, should not be interpreted as a conventional five-a-side tournament.
Why Dakar 2026 took longer to arrive
The IOC media kit records that Senegal was elected host in October 2018 and that the Games were originally planned for 2022. Senegal and the IOC agreed in July 2020 to postpone them amid the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The move makes this the first Summer Youth Olympics since Buenos Aires 2018. The IOC also describes education, cultural exchange and athlete development as part of the event’s purpose, alongside elite youth competition.
How to follow without confusing time zones
Use the official Dakar schedule and results service for event times, start lists and completed results. Check which time zone the display uses before converting it for an Asian location. A local Senegal start time and a time automatically converted by a website can look different without either being wrong.
Separate a scheduled contest from a completed result, and a provisional listing from a confirmed start list. For viewers, broadcasting availability should be checked through the official service for the relevant territory. This preview does not claim a universal free stream or an unannounced rights arrangement.
