US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll Resigns After 18 Months; White House Gives No Reason

Published on

The Dan Driscoll resignation was confirmed by the White House after the US Army secretary submitted his departure following 18 months in the job. The administration praised his service but gave no official reason, while multiple reports cited friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

WASHINGTON | 1 September 2026

Driscoll’s departure removes the civilian head of the United States Army during a period of military modernization and international conflict. The White House did not announce an effective date, successor or acting arrangement in its initial statement.

What has been officially confirmed

  • Driscoll submitted his resignation after approximately 18 months as Army secretary.
  • The White House confirmed the departure and praised his work on readiness, military operations and negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine.
  • No official reason for the resignation was provided.
  • Reports of disagreements with Hegseth come from officials and people familiar with the relationship, not from a public resignation letter.
  • A replacement and Senate-confirmation timetable had not been announced when this report was prepared.

Who is Dan Driscoll?

Driscoll became the 26th secretary of the Army after being sworn in on 25 February 2025. The Army’s official biography describes him as a former armour officer, lawyer and business leader. He served in the Army from 2007 to 2011 and deployed to Iraq.

He is also a friend and former law-school classmate of Vice President JD Vance. Driscoll built a profile around faster procurement, drone warfare and changes intended to make the Army more adaptable to new technology.

What the White House said

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly described Driscoll as effective in advancing the administration’s agenda. Her statement credited him with restoring emphasis on readiness and lethality, supporting military operations and assisting negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

The statement did not say whether President Donald Trump requested the resignation, whether it was accepted with immediate effect or why Driscoll chose to leave. Those unanswered questions matter because a resignation and a dismissal have different implications for leadership stability.

Reported tensions with Pete Hegseth

AP, Reuters and specialist defence publications reported that tension between Driscoll and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had grown over Army priorities, modernization and personnel decisions. These accounts are attributed to officials or unnamed people familiar with the matter.

Neither Driscoll nor Hegseth had issued a detailed public account of their disagreements when this story was prepared. It would therefore be inaccurate to present any single reported dispute as the confirmed cause of the resignation.

Why the Army secretary matters

The secretary of the Army is the service’s senior civilian official. The office oversees budgets, procurement, personnel policy, installations and the implementation of administration priorities. The role is separate from the Army chief of staff, the uniformed professional military leader.

A leadership gap can slow decisions about weapons purchases, force structure and reforms, especially when several senior posts are changing simultaneously. Day-to-day military command continues through established uniformed and civilian chains, so the resignation does not mean the Army lacks operational leadership.

Civilian control and the confirmation process

The Army secretary is a civilian position designed to keep policy, budgets and institutional accountability under elected government oversight. An acting secretary can perform many responsibilities, but a permanent nominee would normally require Senate confirmation.

That process gives lawmakers an opportunity to examine modernization plans, readiness, personnel policy and the relationship between civilian officials and uniformed commanders. Until the White House names an acting official or nominee, claims about who will replace Driscoll remain speculation.

Modernization and drone warfare

Driscoll became associated with efforts to accelerate the Army’s use of drones and reduce procurement timelines. Current wars have shown how inexpensive unmanned systems can threaten vehicles, logistics and fixed positions, forcing large militaries to rethink air defence and electronic warfare.

The latest Russian attacks on Ukraine illustrate that challenge. The Press of Asia’s updated report on the overnight strikes that killed 12 people, including an Indian citizen, details the use of missiles, jet-powered drones and decoys.

International context

The departure comes while the US military is involved in operations and deterrence across several theatres. Middle East violence has affected oil shipping and redirected defence resources. The implications for Indian fuel costs are examined in our US-Iran oil impact analysis.

Washington is also balancing military commitments with diplomacy involving Russia and Ukraine. Driscoll’s reported participation in that channel made his portfolio broader than domestic Army management alone.

What happens next

The administration must identify who will perform the secretary’s duties and whether it will nominate a permanent replacement. A nominee for a Senate-confirmed role normally faces committee scrutiny over experience, policy priorities and civilian control of the military.

Congress will also look for clarity on the modernization programmes Driscoll supported. The most important evidence will come from official personnel announcements, the resignation’s effective date and future Pentagon budget decisions, not speculation about his next political role.
