October 15: WhatsApp has introduced guest calling, allowing people without a WhatsApp account to join a call through a computer browser. Meta announced the feature on October 14.
How to invite a guest
The host needs a WhatsApp account. In the Calls tab, select the plus icon, create a call link and share it with invitees. A guest opens the link on a computer, enters a name and waits for the host to approve entry.
Meta says the feature supports individual and group calls with up to 32 participants. Calls are free, have no time limit and use end-to-end encryption, according to the company.
What guests can and cannot do
Guests can share their computer screen, react and raise a hand. They cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages or directly add another person. Hosts can remove guests.
Integrations for Google and Outlook calendars are planned for later this year. They should not be confused with the guest-calling feature announced this week.
Practical checks before a call
For a class, interview or work discussion, send the invitation through a trusted channel and agree on the time beforehand. Test the browser’s microphone and camera controls before the conversation begins.
A waiting room is useful, but a displayed guest name is not proof of identity. Hosts should check who is joining before admitting someone to a private discussion. Participants should also review what is visible on their screen before sharing it.
The feature details above are Meta’s product claims; The Press of Asia has not independently tested every device or network combination.
