Ashutosh Dixit Takes Over as 29th Air Chief, Sets Out “VAYU” Vision for the IAF

NEW DELHI, November 1: Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, a fighter and test pilot with more than 3,500 flying hours, has taken over as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff, succeeding Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, who retired on October 31 after 42 years of service. On Sunday he laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, received a Guard of Honour at Air Force Station New Delhi and set out “VAYU”, a four-point vision for the Indian Air Force, the Defence Ministry said.

Key highlights

  • Dixit assumed charge as Chief of the Air Staff on the afternoon of October 31; the government announced the appointment on October 6.
  • He was commissioned into the IAF’s fighter stream on December 6, 1986, and is an experimental test pilot and qualified flying instructor.
  • He has flown the Mirage-2000, MiG variants, Jaguar, Tejas, Hawk, Kiran and the IL-78, among others.
  • He was Chief of Integrated Defence Staff during Operation Sindoor and Vice Chief of the Air Staff before taking over.
  • His “VAYU” vision stresses readiness, self-reliance, innovation and jointness with the Army and Navy.

The VAYU vision

The new Air Chief’s guiding vision (Defence Ministry)
LetterThemeWhat it covers
VVigilance, Victory and ReadinessHighest operational preparedness across formations; restoring combat strength to sanctioned levels
AAatmanirbharta (self-reliance)Faster development of Indian platforms, sensors, weapons and technologies
YYukti (ingenuity)Innovation in doctrine, technology and procedures, including AI-enabled command and control and counter-drone capability
UUnity of EffortCloser jointness with the Army, Navy and national agencies, in line with the JAI (Jointness, Aatmanirbharta, Innovation) approach

The ministry described the aim as an air force that is operationally ready, technologically advanced, self-reliant and seamlessly integrated, able to deter conflict through credible air power. The reference to restoring combat strength to sanctioned levels points to one of the IAF’s long-running challenges: keeping enough fighter squadrons in service as older aircraft retire.

A test pilot’s career

Dixit, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, worked on the upgrade programmes for the Jaguar and MiG-27 and on the Initial and Final Operational Clearance of the Tejas LCA Mk-I. He has commanded a Mirage-2000 squadron, a forward base support unit in the Western Sector and Air Force Station Bidar. His senior posts include Air Defence Commander at Southern Air Command, Senior Air Staff Officer at South Western Air Command, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command. He trained at the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Bangladesh and the National Defence College in New Delhi.

2023Ati Vishisht Seva Medal
2026Param Vishisht Seva Medal; Vice Chief of the Air Staff; takes over as Chief of the Air Staff (October 31)

Our calculation

  • Nearly four decades: from his commissioning in December 1986 to taking charge in October 2026 is just under 40 years of service.
  • Age: born on December 9, 1966, he takes over at 59.
  • From test pilot to chief: his record includes work on the Tejas clearance process, relevant experience at a time when the IAF is waiting on more indigenous fighters.

What it means

Dixit takes over an air force that has been through a major operation in 2025, is modernising its fleet and is trying to bring squadron numbers back up while relying more on Indian-made aircraft and weapons. His background as a test pilot involved in the Tejas programme, and his time in the integrated defence staff, fit the two themes he chose to stress: self-reliance and jointness.

What to watch

  • Steps to restore fighter squadron strength, including deliveries of the Tejas Mk1A.
  • Progress on joint theatre structures with the Army and Navy.
  • Investment in counter-drone systems and AI-enabled command and control, which he named in his vision.
