NEW DELHI, November 1: Six states marked their formation day on Sunday — Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Chhattisgarh — with Prime Minister Narendra Modi sending greetings to each. Four of them trace their present shape to November 1, 1956, when the States Reorganisation Act redrew India’s map largely along linguistic lines, making this year the 70th anniversary of that reorganisation. Haryana turns 60 and Chhattisgarh 26.

How the 1956 map came about
After independence, India inherited provinces and princely states drawn for administrative convenience rather than language. Demands for language-based states grew through the early 1950s, and the formation of Andhra State in 1953 was followed by the appointment of the States Reorganisation Commission. Its report led to the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, which took effect on November 1 that year and replaced the old categories of states with 14 states and six union territories.
The reorganisation did not end there. Bombay State was split into Maharashtra and Gujarat in 1960, Punjab was reorganised to create Haryana in 1966, and new states such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand were formed in 2000. Telangana became India’s newest state in 2014.
What the Prime Minister said
In his message to Karnataka, Modi praised the state’s contributions in fields such as IT, biotechnology, aerospace, artificial intelligence and startups. To Madhya Pradesh, he said its people “have made remarkable contributions in every field through their talent and enterprise.” Greeting Haryana, he said the state’s athletes are enhancing the pride of the Tricolour and its farmers are strengthening food security.
Our calculation
- Shared date: six of India’s 28 states — about one in five — mark their formation day on November 1.
- Seventy years on: four of the six (Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu) date their present form to the 1956 Act; Haryana reaches 60 years and Chhattisgarh 26.
What it means
The 1956 reorganisation is one of the founding decisions of the Indian republic: it settled most linguistic disputes of the time and shaped the states that run schools, police, health and much of daily governance today. Seventy years later, the debate has moved on to questions such as the size of states, the sharing of tax revenue and the delimitation of parliamentary seats — but the map drawn in 1956 still frames those arguments.
What to watch
- State government events and announcements marking the 70th anniversary in Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
- Events marking Haryana’s 60th anniversary.
- Wider debates on federalism and delimitation that draw on the 1956 settlement.
