1. Japan: a killing in Okinawa and a protest to Washington
Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, is in Japanese custody on suspicion of killing Anna Yagi, 39, in a Naha hotel early on Saturday and taking her belongings. He denies the allegations, CBS News and Stars and Stripes reported. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime “extremely brutal and heinous”, and Governor Genta Koja told the Marine commander on the island that US discipline efforts were “completely ineffective”. About 160 people protested in Naha on Monday, according to AP. Full report: US Marine held over killing of Okinawa woman.
2. Thailand: four flood scenarios for the IMF–World Bank meetings
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul chaired the preparatory committee on Monday. At 25 cm of water, convoys switch to buses; at 50 cm, delegates move to the Skytrain and metro; at 3 metres, the crisis team would recommend cancellation, The Nation reported. Forecasters expect about 50 mm of rain a day in Bangkok from October 11 to 13, according to the South China Morning Post. Full report: Thailand sets four flood scenarios.
3. Nepal: most Gen Z protest cases cannot be dropped
A committee led by former High Court judge Baburam Regmi found that charges can be withdrawn for only about 300 of the 1,778 people named in 445 cases over the September 2025 protests, because most face allegations such as murder, arson and looting, The Kathmandu Post reported. The Cabinet has sent the report to the Home Ministry for implementation. Gen Z campaign leader Sarishma Thapa said the outcome “strays from the spirit” of an agreement signed in December. Other Nepali outlets give different case counts; our report sets them side by side. Full report: Nepal panel on Gen Z protest cases.
4. Taiwan and the US: a spy charge involving the president’s family
The FBI arrested Wanying Zhang, 34, a real estate agent from Irvine, California, at Los Angeles airport on Sunday. Prosecutors allege she filmed the Seattle-area home of President Lai Ching-te’s son in September 2025 on the instructions of Chinese officials. Taiwan’s Presidential Office called it “transnational repression”; the Chinese Embassy did not respond to AP’s request for comment. A complaint is an allegation, and she has not been indicted. 5. Yemen: the government claims Mocha, the Houthis deny it
Yemen’s internationally recognised government says its forces have retaken the Red Sea port city of Mocha after “fierce fighting with the Houthis”, Al Jazeera reported. The state news agency Saba quoted an army source as saying the troops had “advanced and seized important positions, cutting off supply lines and roads leading to Bab al-Mandeb”. The Houthis rejected the claim: their deputy governor, Fuad Sinan, said in a video that he was “roaming around in the streets of Mocha city”. Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify the battlefield claims. Earlier coverage: attacks on Saudi airports and the government’s claim on Dhubab.
6. Pakistan: the PTI march heads for Khyber
The convoy led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi spent Tuesday night at Mattani, on the outskirts of Peshawar, and was due to leave for Khyber at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dawn reported. It aims to reach Khairabad, on the border with Punjab, on October 8, where Afridi is to announce the next step. “They cannot go any further than Attock,” Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said, according to the newspaper, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the party to call off the march and talk. Earlier coverage: day one of the march.
7. India: on the list for the 2036 Olympics

Ahmedabad is India’s candidate, AP reported. A shortlist is due in March 2027 and IOC members vote in 2029. Full report (in Hindi): India among seven contenders for 2036.
